Yes
My canon 450d is coming up to a year old, over the last two weeks it has failed to turn on twice until I take the battery out and refit it. This happened with different batteries so I do not think they are at fault. It seems to be ok now but with three weeks to go on the warranty I thought it may be better to get it seen to but I do not want to be without it for ages and then it comes back because they cannot find a fault.

So I wondered has anyone else had this problem and when you send a camera away how long is it gone for? (it is going to warehouse express) thanks

Just an idea have you checked your running the latest firmware upgrade?

I'm glad you posted this as I appear to be having the same issue.

What is a firmware upgrade, how do I get one and how much does it cost?

All this digital malarky seems to be another fine example of computers not being as good as mechanical machines like my Dad's 1964 Nikon.

Do you get an error code (err 99)? To be honest I doubt upgrading the firmware would help. Is the lens seated correctly?

It might be best to think about discussing it with the original supplier under warranty whilst it still has it. As for time, I have a 400D that needed the main board replaced and that went by courier and was returned to me within 6 days, but my 40D shutter fault took 7-8 weeks before I insisted and got a replacement (well vouchers that let me get a 50D).

No I have never connected the camera to the computer just put the SD card in the laptop. Could this solve this problem?

Can't gaurantee it but you should always run the latest firmware if you can, as it may have be a software issue.

I'd avoid sending a camera for warranty work back to the vendor you purchased from. I had to send my 40d back for a shutter button repair and got canon to deal with it without the middleman. A colleague of mine had a problem with his 4xxD camera and sent it to the vendor and 4 weeks later it turned out they had forgotten to send it on to Canon... the eidjits.

Takes around 1-2 weeks if it's a straight forward repair.

I would concur with the previous poster and if you are relatively near to the Canon repair centre at Elstree or any other authorised Canon repair centre, you could hand deliver it as with the warranty about to to expire, you do not want to get it snarled up in the mail system especially as they have been taking the odd industrial action or two currently and some mail has been getting delayed......

Have you heard of the sale of goods act?
If you still hace your reciept you can ask for a repair, replacement or refund upto six years if you live in England or five years if you are in Scotland

Have you checked the wording? And the length that is applicable for depends upon the goods, IIRC the wording is a "reasonable time frame"

After 6 months the onus is upon the purchaser to prove the goods are faulty. Considering the owner said he has tried 2 different batteries I'm guessing one of those might be third party, in which case I'm fairly sure Canon could claim that this battery is the cause of any power supply problems

Thanks for all the comments here, in the end I did send the camera back to the supplier WEX who did send it on to canon. It was away for just under 2 weeks came back repaired, cleaned and serviced. They said it was a mechanical fault which is not very specific but at least it is fixed. One good thing about sending it to the supplier first meant I could call them for updates which was much easier than trying to get hold of canon.
