Should I go for a used 50d or 1d mk11n

I'm looking at using this for football both day & night matches at non league level.

It looks as though the used prices are within a few hundred pounds of each other

I am highly qualified to answer this. I had a 50D, sold it for £500, and bought a 1dMk2 (not N) for £500. My photographs improved overnight. Amazing AF, amazing depth of colour. Images just popped. Built like a tank, and really well balanced with solid lenses.

Best move I ever made. Half the number of pixels not noticeable, much better images from Mk2. Why this should be I have no idea, it just was.

Things to bear in mind. 50D much easier to use, more intuitive menu system. Mk2 requires 2 hands to do almost anything. Fiddly, though you get used to it. I use a Mk3 now and do not miss the operation of the Mk2 one little bit! 50D has a lovely screen, Mk2 compares badly. Particularly if shooting at night , be aware that the Mk2 is showing its age in terms of high ISO performance, the 50D outclasses it easily.

All that said, I think the mk2N version has a better menu, a nicer screen, and a slightly larger buffer. Still a much better camera than a 50D, even if older. Do not hesitate, you will never look back. For sports, and for the money, you can't beat it. Different league.

Mk2s are good, mk3 are amazing. I couldn't recommend 50d for anything moving or high ISO

That's strange, as I use mine for fast moving, low light sports with excellent results.

I guess it's just knowing how to use it.

The 50d is superb and would suit your needs better than the mkIIn.

The first question I would ask is do you have a camera and lenses currently? If you do and have more ef-s lenses than ef then I think that answers your question.
If you have nothing at all them it's either or.
There is nothing shabby about the 50D or the 1D you mention. If you have no kit at all I think I would be buying the cheaper body and spending the rest on good quality lenses to suite your subject as both cameras will perform well with good glass attached.

I have both 50D and 1D mk 2 (not the N version though).
I concur the 1D is the better camera, tank like build quality, huge battery, great picture quality, very very good AF and fps, its a pro camera built to do pro stuff. Even an 'old' one feels quality, but it has a strange (to some) menu/button system, personally I like it, its not easy to accidentally re-set something once set.
One small point (not sure if relevant to 2N) the custom functions can be set back to standard (in camera) but some cannot be changed unless you have Firewire which on the 2 was notoriously awful in getting to work with a modern PC/Laptop that doesnt have a Firewire connection. I cant get mine to communicate despite buying firewire cards etc.
50D - its "small" lightweight and a prosumer unit, good enough (very good actually) at what it does but falls heavily under the shadow of the 40D, it wasnt much of an improvement tbh and in my view a stop-gap before Canon went 7D/60D.
Now if you were comparing 7D/1D the answer wouldnt be so clear-cut.

As it is the 1D outguns the 50D in every department (ignoring the 1.3 vs 1.6 crop factor argument) except no in-built flash on the 1D.

Thanks up to now to those who have given advice.

I will be buying a 70 - 200mm 2.8L lens to go with the body that I decide on.

I have owned both at different times. Absolutely loved the menu on the 50D and it's ease of use. But AF results and handling of the 1D is sublime.

I sold my Id Mark IIn and bought a 7D purely for the higher pixel density. This enables me to crop when photographing birds and still retain high levels of detail.

The same reason I bought my 7D and the only reason for me anyway I will probably keep the 7D over the 1D. Other than the higher MP's I prefer the 1D.
Perhaps I'll just keep both :)

I've owned both, 1D every time.

I had upgraded through D60, 10D & 20D over the years before buying my current 1DmkIIN, I still love using it even after all this time.

As mentioned above the image quality is exemplary despite the meagre megapixel count and the build quality is beyond reproach.

My 70-200 f2.8 IS stays permanently attached to it, likewise the 17-40 f4 is firmly affixed to my venerable old 5D.

I also own a 50D and a 1DII (not N though) I bought the 1D as a back up and wanted something with a different sensor size also. After buying... the 50D soon became the backup! As others have said nice clean crisp images even at 1600ISO fast AF and FPS and built like a tank. I find the two finger menu system a little awkward though but you get used to it.

I recently bought the 70-200mm 2.8L lens. I wish I had done so sooner, a great lens.
