So my old 17" old Dell XPS has gone to the great recycling skip in the sky. Currently plugging away on a 12" Dell Latitude (E7240 with i5 4300U). While I am trying to save money I have been looking at what Dell was offering, as I thought I would be replacing the old laptop with a new Dell Inspiron 5000 (store or outlet) as this is in the £600 odd budget. But all that I am seeing for Dell is i5 and i7 with a U (7200u and 7500u). After a bit of checking it seems these are 2 cores and hyper threading, while ok for the 12" which is just a storage and internet machine it not really what I had in mind for something that is going to be working with the D810 files in Lightroom.

Call me old fashion but to me i5 and i7 have always been four cores or four cores and hyper threading respectively. If I throw too much at the 12" it will bog down with the U chip in it despite the 12Gb of ram and a 500Gb msata drive. It seems that there are non-U chips in 17"s with some of the other brands like MSI and pcspecialist which are over budget.

So should I fear the U if it turns out it is not up to the job?
