Just bought a new desktop PC (Win 7 i5 64 bit) and note that it's got McAfee security products pre installed and the Windows Firewall and Windows Defender are disabled.

Now I have an aversion to pre installed software that is going to nag me like mad to upgrade and probably stop working altogether eventually.

So what are peoples opinions on letting Microsoft protect my PC, using the Windows firewall and Microsoft Security Essentials anti virus (needs to be downloaded I see)

Thanks in advance.

David

I've used both "paid for" (Kaspersky Internet Security) and free (Avast and AVG off the top of my head) antivirus solutions in the past and whilst they were great (especially Kaspersky), since upgrading to Windows 7 over a year ago I've solely used Microsoft's Security Essentials and Windows Firewall.

MSE's reviews are excellent and whilst it doesn't feel or look as impressive as, say KIS, it seems to do the job very well.

Yes.

Mcaffee, and for that matter Norton too are just too big, try to do too much and integrate themselves so much into your system that they're a real pain to remove. Kaspersky is good but can be too complex to set up at times and it does tend to slow everything up.

Personally I much prefer vipre LINK. Just the plain antivirus one, not the one with spyware etc. It's small, light, and it doesn't slow your machine down. I've been using it for 3 years now, no problems at all. It costs me around £40 in total for every machine I have (a couple of desktops and 3 laptops) so it's not bad value. If you couple this with malwarebytes (free download) you're fairly well covered.

cheers

Free ones are just as good if not better. Avast has got a huge following

I used to use Bullguard back in my Windows days. It's not free but it worked so well I had no issues with paying for it! It's not a memory hog like Norton and McAffee, and it works almost entirely in the background unlike some of the free ones which are very in your face. They have a 60 day free trial on their website so I thoroughly recommend giving it a go. It's not the biggest name in internet security but it's definitely my favourite!

Edit to add it also takes care of backups if you want to.

I currently use spybot and avg and never had any issues at all

I use Microsoft Security Essentials and it's been fine, and seems to be more 'alert' than AVG pro (paid for version), which I used to use

Another voting for ripping it out and using MSE.

I don't know McAfee but why pay for PC security?

I've used the 'net very heavily for general surfing, emails, shopping, banking, gaming for close to ten year and always used free security.

Only had two problems which were both my fault.

some people claim free ones wont be as reliable or as well supported.

but the fact is those free ones are subsidised by the companys paid for versions (MS volume licencing for business and forefront consoles, avast pro offers some minor extra features etc).

Thanks for all the replies, it's going to be bye bye McAfee :D, I just hope it un installs cleanly :boxer:

McAfee made my new pc too slow, uninstall and run c cleaner sorted it out, Avast and common sense should keep it safe, I hope :)

I use Kaspersky for last few years now.always manage do get a good price on license for 3PC's (less then 20 quid)

Another vote for Microsoft Security Essentials. Works very well with my Windows 7 machine and is free.

Agreed. If you want to pay for AV Kaspersky is a very very good option.
