Should I buy a new Canon 6D?

Yes
I have a 7D ii and a 5D classic. The former I use for fast moving subjects given its great AF system but I prefer the 5D for landscapes and for some static subjects. I appreciate that the 6D will soon be replaced, but as an ameteur will I see any improvements over my existing cameras if I buy one? I am thinking much better low light performance and much improved screen, wifi and liveview over the 5D. Low light performance is likely to be the main benefit for me.

Other option is a used 5Diii.

Nah, join us to the dark side…
get a D810! :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Simply Yes.

The 5dIII would replace both your current cameras, but that's not what you asked.

The 6d will give you a slightly better IQ, AF system, WIFI, GPS and a better rear screen etc just as you'd expect from a more modern camera.

Does this mean you rate the 5D iii AF system better than the 7Dii?

I think I would miss the reach of the 7Dii over the 5Diii.

If the IQ of the 6D is only slightly better than the 5D, then I could probably cope without the other benefits.

Thanks for your time.

Oops
Missed it was a MkII, the 5d III isn't better, but comparable IIRC.

I believe the low light (high ISO) performance of the 6D is slightly better than the 5D Mk III (it's certainly impressed me). Much has been made of the lower number of focus points on the 6D, but I believe the central 'cross type' focus point will function in darker conditions than the central focus point on the 5D Mk III (but I'll stand correcting on that if I'm wrong!), so see how those two play if you're in a game of 'Top Trumps' with a 5D Mk III owner! :D

The 6D is well overdue a replacement, the MK2 rumours have been about for years!

I tried the 6D alongside my Nikon and I did like it, just thought it needed some improvements ergonomic wise (that might just be because I am used to Nikon grip) and it did feel a little dated.

However I have seen some cracking images from it and it is still used by amateurs and pros alike and think it would be my choice.

The IQ of the 6d is MUCH better than the 5d classic. At over 400 ISO it's light and day different.

I didn't rate the IQ of my old 5dc much over my 50d.

Also the 6d AF is very good at fast moving subjects - those that say it has poor AF have never used it in anger;

I own a lot of cameras and the 6d is my favourite. I use it for everything and I can't think of anything it can't do brilliantly.

OP purely for landscapes and low light ability purely in terms of sensor capability the 6D will offer you approx 1ev better DR than the 5D, and significant improvement in high ISO performance. In these areas the 6D is marginally better than the 5D3 too. Whether 1ev difference is noticeable in the real world I guess it depends on the scene. Unfortunately they are still relatively low.

So the only solution is a move to the dark side?!

I have tried 6D for a few hours and i agree the low light performance is very good but in decent light I couldn't see much difference to the 5Dc in terms of IQ.

Thanks for all the replies.

If you want DR and noise handling then yes, but some prefer Canon colours and vice versa. The 5D4 gets you close but still 1ev down on Nikon, plus it's a bit on the pricey side. Of course, you can always bracket exposures to get the DR.

How do you find the 5Dii?

Noisy in the shadows but then I knew it wouldn't compare to the D750. It's a completely different animal.
I may go for the 6D or 5DMK3 at some point.

I took a 14 minute exposure today with a 16 stopper ND and it's woeful in the shadows (and other places)

The new 6D, if it ever arrives, will have all sorts of improvements and cost a lot more money. If the improvements are worth it, or needed by you, then wait. If you want a great camera now, at a reasonable price, just get one. Latest ETA for the mark ii is early Autumn.

Hmmm. There's a very noticeable difference even at base ISO imo. The Dynamic range is significantly better, the images are much cleaner above ISO 400 and of course, much better resolution.

The files from the 6d are far better and more mailable. Try pushing shadows on a 5dc and see the noise and mush, push them on the 6d and see the detail come out cleanly.

Im surprised you couldn't see a difference, the 6d simply blows it away. But then it would [emoji52]. You're comparing it to a camera released in 2005!

I sold my 5dc as my 50d was out performing it. I was never impressed much by the 5dc.
