Hi

Ok going to take my jump into the Dslr world and as i hoping to add the value to a 0% deal i was wondering if i should bite the bullet and get a flash in advance of my needs.

Was going to get a Canon 500D and the Canon Speedlite 430EX II just so i'm covered for future advancements.

Or is Canon Speedlite 270EX ok i'd rather buy once then have to get the 430 if the 270 is going to be limited.

Or will flash on camera be fine. You guys are probaly sick of my questions now.

But flash maybe used for some of my indoor photography. To be honest as i'm not and expert i never know when to use a flash and when not.

Hiya,
on camera built-in flash is fine for 'snaps' but you will get harsh shadows.
On camera higher powered units will do the same, however if you can rotate the seperate units (270/430) head and 'bounce' the light off walls/ceilings so much the better as it will soften shadows considerably. To do that you need a head that will twist and swivel prefereably and have a high output, I'd buy the 430 f I had the money.
Additionally I believe a 550/580 can use the 430 as a slave (or maybe even another 430?) so you can future proof yourself should you want to add another 'gun' later.

But, as in al things photgraphic it depends on what you want to achieve as to what kit you need to buy.

Hi thanks Matt

I don't think the 270 has a swivel head and yes i notice what you mention even on point and shoot cameras.

The 430 EXII is a lovely unit for the price.
A couple of friends have the Nissin equivalents which are £50 or so cheaper, however I honestly prefer the results from my 430.
If you have the money and think that your style of photgraphy requires a flash unit then it's a good buy.
If you want to get into strobism a bit more then, as Matt said, it may be worth getting the 580 to act as a Master unit should you want slave flashes.

Kerso does both for a good price, much cheaper than UK stockists.

....reminds me I must get an off camera TTL cable from FITP.

I would recommend the 430ex II. It was perfect for me in terms of power, size, price and features wise. I would probably experiment with strobism later with a 580ex but forking out a total of £500 on flash guns is a bit excessive for me as I am not a pro and just taking pics for fun. :D

I looked into both and have plumped for the 430EX II
Costs a little more but you don't have the hassle or selling the 270 at a later date

Agree with that, I bought 420/550 2nd hand off e-bay :)
At least with the 430 you get an upgrade path if you want to go that way later.

Cheers i know kesro does it cheaper but he does not give interest free that jessops do with the camera, a flash gun and a spare battery or bag i should hit £800 odd and get 12 month 0%.

Might cost me a bit more. But it's either that or no Camera until mid next year if i manage to save that much.

Just bought the 270 to go with my G11, and it has a 90 degree bounce head; also just for fun put it on my 5 as a fill flash and you hardly notice its there which you can't say about the 580; they do say horses for courses though.

get the 430, its great on camera, then you can take it off camera and do LOADS of screwing around with a pair of 30 quid triggers :D

Just to let you know, am sure you have checked the fine print but if you miss/are late with any repayments these deals will often make you pay interest for the FULL amount for the FULL twelve months, so be very very careful that doesn't happen (This wasn't supposed to be a lecture, just be careful!)
