A friend of mine mentioned he wanted some "model type" pictures taken of him (and his GF). As I need all the experience I can get I thought this could be a good opportunity to get some portrait work of someone who loves posing.

Trouble is i'm limited with my kit - I have a flashgun and reflector but no studio lighting at all and no professional style backgrounds. I think he's after a variety but definately a few "mens health" style images.

Can anyone be kind enough to give me a few pointers how I can get the most out of this?
Hopefully if i can pull it off a few of their mates might want a few doing so i might even make a quid or two (ps - i'm not trying to play professional here, just hoping to offer a better standard of image then they will get with their compacts and they can't currently afford a pro shoot).

Of course! I as about to go to N&G searching for a thread with the same title. Have to say, I am a little disappointed!

You got what you need really only thing now is imagination :)

Choose a location that is relevant to the type of shots you want and go for it, you don't need lots of fancy gear to achieve good shots.

You see plenty of images on here taken without studio backgrounds etc and they are top notch.

Good luck

He needs to be utterly ripped to look good on camera, 7% or less bodyfat. Trust me I'm 10% and I don't look that good via the lens.

I asked simailr thread so check this out http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=245475&goto=newpost

Also if its clothed stuff then get outside, woodlands can work well for a nice backdrop, or just some ol farm buildings. Anywehre works really, i've gone shoots in and around my flat, but outside is best for lighting. Its more about the subjects than the backgrounds but simply stuff can work, anything really, bushes, white plaster walls, brickwork, just depends how creative you are with it.

If you're keen on a fix of tech to help, then get your flash off-camera. Do it the clever way with a Canon TTL cord, or on the cheap with a basic sync cord or eBay wireless flash triggers. Trouble is, this gives a whole new dimension to the creative decisions you'll have to make!

I've got some wireless flash thingies..trouble is I've never really done much off camera flash shuff before to know what to do really.

So i guess we just need to think of a decent location and take it from there..

Keep it simple. :)

Can you find a brick wall or some grafitti? How about some corrugated steel?

As Richard says there is the classic scrap yard image "David with Tyres"

Have you got access to a corridor with window light anywhere or an old building with a big window? All classic locations that need nothing other than window light/daylight and a simple reflector is all the lighting you should need. If you don't have one go out and buy some cooking foil and cover a piece of cardboard.

Ah thanks Alison, spome great ideas there. especially the graffiti wall I really like that one. so what we'rte looking for are some good "rugged" looking locations.

I've got a 5 in 1 reflector so we should be ok - weather permitting!

and if it's not.....bus stations, railway stations, libraries and town halls with big pillars, any reflective surface you can find so glass walls/windows/granite surfaces and if it's REALLY wet ask in some hotels if you can shoot in the public areas so long as you don't disturb the guests. I've had models draped all over the couches in posh hotels JUST because I had the nerve to go and ask the receptionist if I could have 10 minutes in the foyer :)
