Short dated film?

Quick question - I have just bought a pack of Velvia from an Amazon retailer and the date is 10/2012. I don't know much about slide film but should I have expected the date to be further away? Ironically I could have bought it for £7 less from another retailer who was selling film with the same expiry date as short dated stock!
 
It is a bit on the short side, and I would say it should be noted in the description if it only has a few months till expiry. Fresh film typically has a couple of years on it, and I would expect 18 months minimum typically, unless buying something at a discount because of its date.

Might be worth getting in touch - same happened to me once and got a partial refund from a supplier.

Having said that, the film will be absolutely fine even after the expiry date, assuming it has been kept reasonably cool. Even if not, it's probably unlikely to show any issues until well after its expiry date. Film doesn't suddenly go bad, and in fact takes a long time to, especially slow film like Velvia. So the alternative advice is simply not to worry about it.

on a more serious note, slide is supposed to be the most fragile type of film as far as longevity is concerned, although I've been using some 4 year ood velvia which is perfectly fine.
I think if you accept before hand there is a chance your ood film may fail, and not expect perfect performance from every roll, the odd one that does cock up, ain't so bad..:)
 
I have recently found some 120 Velvia that I believe expired around 12 years ago. It has been stored at room temperature.

Is it worth using or am I flogging a dead horse.

I have a Zeiss Super Ikonta 532/16 that I have never used, I think I'll put the film through that. Should make it a really interesting experiment :)
 
Crikey, I guess its going to be pot luck with the 10 year old 8x10 velvia I bought recently then.
