I recently got a bargain M42 lens, a Chinon f1.7 55m lens. It can only be used fully manual on my Sony A200 but I have found that it has made me fall in love with photography all over again! Has anyone else found this? Does anyone else shoot wide open? It has made me see things completely different!

I recently bought a Sigma 35 1.4, I'm shooting wide open, or barely stopped down [f/2] most times I use it. That was the point in buying it after all :)

Lovely images there.

This is very true! I've come from a 18-70mm f3.5/4.5 Sony kit lens too, the difference is amazing. And using full manual is much easier than I thought! I love the manual focus!

I rarely shoot stopped down much, I prefer the depth created by having distant stuff blurred, even a small amount.

Check out a Minolta Rokkor PF 58mm f1.4 - if you're impressed with that Chinon you'll be going properly gooey over the Rokkor.

I have mainly prime lenses and love shooting wide open or close to!

Razor thin DOF is just awesome when you get it right :D

Nice shots Jenna, you may well find yourself becoming addicted to M42 lenses, they are cheap as chips (Minolta 1.4 excepted) and great for all kinds of work.

Thank you, I was considering buying a cheap m42 film camera, its been ages since I've used film, but the developing wouldn't be treat as I'd have to send them off, so m42 lenses on my camera us a perfect compromise!

Strangely enough Jenna, I now own 4 M42 cameras (2 Zenits and 2 Pentax Spotmatics), which I purchased just for the lenses - Takumar 55 f1.8, Takumar 135 f3.5, Pentacon 50 f1.8 and Helios 55 f2. The lenses are all good and work fine with my Sony A700. I keep meaning to load a couple of films and have a play with the older cameras but haven't got around to it yet.
If you want some other M42 lenses, then sometimes buying them with a camera is cheaper than just buying the lens - crazy, but that is what I have found.;)

Yeah I have noticed that, its just finding them! The car boot sales start again next month that's the trick! I bought a Tamron 80 to 200mm from a car boot last year, fully working and all auto, perfect alpha fit, £8! People don't usually know what they are selling!

Can you believe that this is one of my most looked at images on Flickr?
A ropey old Tamron - but it still has potential:)

A very heavy lens, which produces very weird effects close up
