Just watched a review on the 40D and they mentioned it has a USB port so you can connect a hard drive to it, and shoot directly. I've not looked on my 400D yet, but im guessing this is a detail that all DSLR's, within reason, have?

If so, if you bought an EHD, is there any way to shoot wirelessly to it, ie. a USB transmittor or something that connects to the camera, stick the HD into something near-by and snap away?

I doubt it' s across the range just yet. You could in theory shoot wirelessly to it using the Wireless File Transmitter [WFT] and having the HDD plugged into a machine and shared etc. The question is why would you want to? The chances of failure are greater and unless you are working with massive files the usual cards are the better option.

Fair play matey, I wasn't personally thinking of doing it, but i'd been pondering if it was possible, or if anyone actually did it.

It's definitely possible it's whether it's plausible or not. The cash you'd outlay for it would equal a huge number of cards.

You could use the 'tethered shooting' system to get shots onto a local drive but this would need to be connected. Can see this being useful for studio work.

If the WFT wasn't so ridiculously expensive [£600+] I'd have one to play with.

Gottcha.

If you use one with a power pack you can stick the HDD in your pocket, like you would a remote battery when shooting in extreme cold.

Given you can get a 100GB for under £100, its a better deal than cards, but only worth it if you needed that much space.

You can shoot shots on the 400d and they can be exported to a Laptop or computer.

You need to install the canon software on the pc/laptop and then connect the 400d via the USb cable

you can remote shoot from the control panel on the pc, adjust the fstop, and av values.

when you shoot you can decide where you want to save the images to on your pc, either locally or onto a extenal Drive.

I have not ried conencting a usb drive directly to the camera, but only issues I can see might be power, or the comaptability of teh camera to reconise the USB drive

You can certainly shoot tethered with a laptop, and some of those Asus EEE PC's could possibly be used as a semi-portable system.

However if you wish to use an external HDD, you'll need the £ 700ish optional grip.

I always shot with my 40D connected to my laptop. Pictures stored straight to HD.

The 40D needs the wireless fire transmitter if you want to write directly to an USB device other than a PC. If there's a WFT for the 400D I would suspect the same option is available.
