I went to Brands at the weekend to see the BTCC. Was very impressed with the race but i couldnt get through the fences with the camera (shooting, not phsically)

How do i manage it?

Depends what lens you are using, but with the autofocus activated, it tends to focus on the closest subject which unfortunately is the fencing. The way around this is to have a longer lens that you can focus beyond the fence and onto the action, another way is to manually focus on the subject or on an object rough the same distance as where the car or bike would be when it passes you.

Longish read but this might be of use. The short version is make the fence appear out of focus.

Focusing shouldn't be too problematic. It sometimes tries to go for the fence but usually doesn't (presumably because the AF system can't see the fence very well either).
