Yes
Hi Guys, I'm thinking of getting a netbook for work, and I would prefer one running Linux, but just wondering if it is possible to shoot tethered to this with Canon 50d and what software I would need.

Cheers

Not sure if it would work but if you cannot find any native Linux software you could try Wine and DSLR Remote Pro from Breezesys.

The software that came with your canon will allow you to shoot tethered with either windows or mac OS. Don't think it will work with any flavour of Linux. As far as I know Breeze also only works with PC's or Mac

Note quite answering op's question but Windows7 64bit doesn't seem to support the Canon software for tethered shoots.
Only mention it in case someone tries a vm/wine solution.

Windows 7 64 bit plus 40D using eos utility program works for me.

Just fired up to double check but still no go:

350D will not work in 'PC Communication' mode (PTP yes but pointless imo) under 7 64bit.
However a 32bit XP VM guest under the above host OS works fine as ever.
Since op has a 50 and a 40 is confirmed working I guess I either upgrade the body or go for Aperture!

appreciate knowing the 40D works, don't feel quite as let down by MS (well I guess it is Canon's driver issue really) OS's!

It's doable but long winded. I've not tried myself but have read a few long enough pages on it to put me off trying for now. If you are au-fait with linux then you could give it a go, if not then I'd probably recommend not bothering TBH.
