Shooting small children

I've been asked to photograph a 3 month old baby and his parents at the end of the month, but it'll be the first time I've photographed such a small child.

Are there any "typical" shots I should do first off? I'm shooting at the client's home, hopefully they'll all be more relaxed there.

I'm assuming the softbox won't damage his eyes at all?

n.b. for the uninitiated, 'lead' is the amount you aim in front of a moving target, so that by the time the bullets have travelled from the weapon to the target, they hit the target. If you aim 'at' a moving target, the bullets pass harmlessly behind...
The amount of 'lead' depends on distance, target speed and whether you're on a moving platform.
Hitting moving targets from moving helicopters requires some degree of skill - unless you use a Mini-Gun, in which case it's like watering a lawn...

be fair chaps/chapesses, its only the noisy ones that need to be shot.

This is probably not very useful but a bit of my experience. I photographed children for the first time a few days ago for a friend at work. I have got to say it was more difficult than I imagined.

There was a one year old girl and two year old boy. The little girl was gorgeous and so photogenic and i got some great close ups with my nifty fifty. Unfortunately my friend is re-decorating her flat so I didnt have any clear backgrounds so a lot of my shots have distracting backgrounds even though a used a very shallow depth of field.

The little boy was a bit of a nightmare as he was so camera shy. It was sunny so we took him outside and let him kick the ball around and I got some action shots. I dont have any of him looking at the camera and smiling but have got some good playing shots.

I made my friend aware that this was my first time so lowered her expectations. I doubt they will be any good for christmas cards but after a bit of post-processing they will be some good snaps to hold on to.

So any tips on the medium/large sized ones that keep throwing eggs/tomato's/half bricks at my windows...

So far Arkady's solution is sounding good - any ideas as to what minigun mount for an upstairs window? :lol:
 
from a distance....and without intruding into their space

natural light i would feel more useful than any other source...skin tones
 
You dont seem to have a lens with shallow depth of field. The 50 1.8 is a fantastic lens at a fantastic price for portraits.

For them you want Claymores with command-wires and proximity switches...

Just sit back, listen to the booms and turn up the TV to drown out the screams...:D
