Shooting shooting tips!!

Am off clay pigeon shooting with the girlfriend and a couple of mates on Saturday (never been before) so am going to take the camera along!

Apart from the obvious "don't get shot" any tips for shooting shooting?

I went to a clay shoot with some experienced shots last summer. Most enjoyable morning. Apart from the obvious safety issues, take along a pair of ear defenders !

As for the photography, I took some shots from directly behind the shooter, trying to get the clay in the frame as well. I used found I needed a shutter speed of about 1/1000 to freeze the movement. I used continuous shoot mode and shot 3 or 4 frames. I also took shots from the side, trying to capture the shot coming out of the gun barrel. All I managed to get was smoke! Another shot I tried was capturing the used cartridges being ejected from the gun as it was broken to reload.

I hope this gives you some ideas.

Thanks guys! I'll get some ear plugs too, if not for the shooting they'll come in handy for the girlfriend moaning about how much her shoulder hurts all the way home!!!

If it's a real clay shoot (not corporate entertainment) then be sure to ask people before you photograph them. A lot of shooters don't like to be photographed, for obvious reasons.

When it comes to the photography, watch the swing of the gun before getting into position to take shots, not all clubs are able to protect people from being at the wrong end of the barrel. If it's sunny, choose a stand where the shooter is backlit, this will add a lot of drama and backlight the smoke.

offer to do the traps for a bit..
