One of the girls I work with has called in a favour I owe and asked me to photograph her daughter and newborn. Unfortunately wildlife and macro are more my thing so any advice would be great.
The only lighting I have is my 430ex (guessing the mt-24ex wont be of much help). I do have some modifiers from my macro kit namely a Stofen type diffuser, Lumiquest mini softbox and a FITP 24" softbox. I could also get the flash off camera on a short ttl cord and side bracket or possibly try the ebay triggers. Lens wise either the nifty fifty or 17-85mm f4-5.6.
Just after a few nice images and would be grateful for any help you guys can offer.

Put the 430EX in the softbox and use it quite close. Use the MT-24 on camera for a dash of fill-in (for which it is perfect) and set it in master mode so it controls the 430EX and you can shoot in E-TTL. 50mm is a good focal length.

Or, using window light (north facing, or overcast day) shoot with daylight at low f/number on the 50 1.8. Put a big reflector on the shadow side.

Either way should look pretty good  Get some practise in first through. Careful focus if you go for the shallow depth of field treatment - focus on the eyes, but you'll have to decide whether to go for mum or baby - you won't get both sharp (or very unlikely). Fresh batteries in everything. And a spare set.

Leave the flash at home and use soft natural light from a window - 50mm and a wide aperture.
