Just quick question when shooting off camera without Ettl and in M.

When people talk about shooting in manual mode do they mean manual mode as in just change the zoom and power setting or the fully manual mode where you program in the aperture and ISO in the flashgun?

'Manual' is one of the most abused terms! But you can usually get the meaning from the context.

In this case, manual just means setting the power yourself.

Thanks Hoppy.

Just a quick question as I will be playing around with stuff tomorrow. I've got my self an umbrella set up to shoot through. At moment I have one flash gun, but want to get use to using if off camera.

Subject will be a few feet away in an indoors environment. Generally is there a rule or something as to what power to use in 'M' to shoot though an umbrella? Would it be full power or a bit less? I wouldn't imagine using something like 1/128 to shoot through an umbrella.

Umbrella is a 40" kood.

The rule is, you adjust the power to give you correct exposure at the f/number and ISO of your choice. If you can.

If you can't, you trade the settings to get the best compromise. Lower f/number if you don't need much depth of field, raise the ISO if you're not worried about noise, run up to full power if fast recycle time isn't a problem.

Set exposure by chimping and checking the histogram and blinkies.
