Now I know about the sensor you have to time len`s by 1.6 how would this effect it if I was to get a 100mm macro len`s for the 550d would this be the best macro len`s for this camera of say go for the 60mm len`s

Also if some could explain the 1.6 sensor times table to me I noe this maybe daft question but sometimes get confusing :bang: when trying to look at what len`s I need when you have to facter in the difference it makes

In terms of magification the 60mm, 100mm and 180mm all give the same size image on the camera's sensor at the minimum focussing distance. However the longer the lens the more working distance you get.
As I understand it the difference, in terms of macro, between a full frame and a 1.6 crop sensor would be the size of the image. If you were to photograph a ruler at the minimum focussing distance (1:1) the full frame would show 36mm, the crop sensor 22mm.

Thanks for that

...I have the 550d with 100mm macro and it is a good combination. I personally wouldn't go for the 60mm as even with 100mm I often feel the need to get closer.

erm not sure what you mean by that

OP- as Rhod says any lens with a 1:1 macro ratio will produce the same image reguardless of focal length when focussed at its minimum focus distance.

This is 1:1 on a crop sensor, and you can see the same size on the ruler as the sensor size 22mm

this is half life size 1:2 so you can see twice as much ruler as the sensor width

the thing that changes will focal length is working distance (MWD) - the distance from the end of the lens to the subject, a longer MWD can make it easier to capture bugs ans you dont have to get as close.

Another thing to consider is weight, the 150mm & 180mm are quite heavy and can be difficult to hand hold

Also dont forget light - as you will be shooting at small apertures typically f11-16 you will need a diffused flash to get the best from any macro lens.

paul thanks for that it explains alot to me

Another recommendation for the canon 100mm f2.8 but the Sigma 105 mm and Tamron 90mm are both highly recommended.

I have a 550d and use an EF-S 60mm for macro work. I mainly shoot inanimate stuff so working distance isn't as big an issue as bugs (although it can be used for that as well) 60mm makes a decent head and shoulders portrait lens on a crop body as well.
