Only every tried this once and the results were ok i guess

whats the benefits of RAW? been told/read that RAW images take in more light and can be easier to edit

whats the best program to use to edit? i have PhotoShop CS2. and will this open Raw files or do i need specialist software to open them and convert them over to be able to open them

Shooting RAW gives you more control over the post processing, for example you can change the exposure to a much greater extrent than you can with a jpg.

I've not used CS2, but that should be fine for RAW.

Depends what camera you have as to wether photoshop CS2 can open your RAW files. If you have a new one 40d, D300 or something.. then youd need the latest RAW plugin and that only works with CS3.

hello. i use raw all the time with my 30d.

it's been a life saver. after you get the images to your pc you can change the exposure by up to a few stops and bring back any parts that may have previously been lost. certainly saved photos that were headed for the recycle bin a few times. i never used raw until i had a lesson in it at uni, and ive never looked back. i would recommened anyone use it from now all the time. :) other things you can do to them...change the colours (by this i mean edit the luminosity/saturation/brightness of each individual colour). you can correct vignetting and colour fringing. you have advanced curves controls too. and so much more. can you tell i love it? :D

like i said i use a 30d. and i use adobe bridge to sort all the files (you can label them, batch edit them, all very helpful) and then i use cs3 to edit them. there usually software cd's with raw editing available with whatever camera you buy. ive tried canons own and i prefer bridge/photoshop combo. but thats just me. after editing them in photoshop i save them as TIFF's for ultimate picture-quality-win.

ah crap

good to know i can/should do it but not good to see it wont work in CS2 lol

Isn't there a Nikon raw processing program? Like Canon DPP?

Nikon do Capture NX... which isn't a bad program, but it's very very memory hungry :)

Capture NX is an unbelievably versatile program - the scope for editing NEF/RAW files (& even Jpegs too :p) is vast & I use it for nearly all of my post processing combined with Photoshop.

It is, as Matty said, a memory hungry program (really really really memory hungry!!) & can run very slowly unless you're working on a bit of a monster computer - my Mac is no slouch but it runs slowly even on that.
I consider the waiting times to be a worthwhile investment though for the results that it can give

i got the nikon software which came with camera

the last time all i did was convert them to jpeg's and edited in photoshop but i want to be able to open them in photoshop ideally to see what can be done

edit, pc spec is no problem

2.6 dual core. 4gb ram. 1 TB storgae so plenty to go at

never used bridge so no idea on that lol

will take a few on friday and convert to DNG and have a play about and see what happens

Mind if I hijack?

I shoot in RAW and JPEG, but some settings will only allow me to save a JPEG.

If I decide to shoot RAW only, but choose a setting that previously only let me save a JPEG, what will it actually save as?

Did that make sense? :p

i presume you mean a setting on the camera such as "scene" etc. Raw just take s a straight reading of the information from the sensor, so you wouldn't be able to use a camera setting when shooting raw. settings on the camera will do some processing on the information from the sensor hence you cannot shoot raw with these settings. hope this is understandable.

Take a look at RAW Therapee.

http://www.rawtherapee.com/

Finally someone else who mentions it. Have a look at my reviews in the reviews section, most of the shots there have been converted with RawTherapee.
UFRaw isn't bad either when used with the GIMP.
Nikon ViewNX is OK, but it's mostly for simpler conversions or for handling high noise shots.

And the GIMP will process 16-bit linear, soon.

RAW Therapee will give SilkyPix a run for its money.

I had a look for myself last night, was kinda lazy asking here wasn't it?

I think Betty was referring to her own question if you read the thread carefully. Also take note of the smiley in her post.
