Shooting in rain - tips needed ..........

I've got a job as a 2nd shooter at an event this weekend however i guess the rain is going to be avoidable .....

How do i stop my camera gettng wet ? Do i need a purpose made cover or do you have any tips ?
 
Cut a hole in a good quality carrier bag,put lens through the hole,elaccy band around the lens hood trapping the carrier bag,rest of bag over camera.

Not ideal,but cheap and cheerful......:)
 
See if anyone you know has one of those lightweight rain jackets they don't need any more and cut the sleeves off. the wrist elastic is the right size for the lens and there is room in the sleeve for your hand and for you to look through the viewfinder.
 
pack of 2 from optech try them before it rains i had to cut the viewfinder hole bigger.

so then i went to cornbury and it rained and ide left them at home :suspect:

plan b a great big black bag doable, but camera still got a little wet well the end of the lens has to stick out :bonk:
 
If you can, keep your back to the wind while actually shooting. That way the wind shouldn't blow as much rain onto the front element of the lens.
Take plenty of lens tissues to dry the front element - however hard you try to keep the rain off it, some will beat your best efforts.
Use lens hoods - the rain shadow will help.
Use your biggest memory card - however good the weatherproofing of the body, an open door will invite water in.
If possible, stick with one lens - however good the waterproofing etc!
 
I second the plastic bag idea, it worked when I was shooting in a downpour.

When we're at horse shows, the tog that I shoot for gives us the choice whether we take a chance and shoot in rain. We had a one day event last weekend where it monsooned, and I took the decision to hide in my car. I will shoot in spitting rain, but anything more I pack up and take cover.

At the end of the day it's not worth risking damaging your equipment for the sake of getting a horse going over the jump- something like 30% of competitors buy a photo from the day, so if you miss one of those 30% it's just bad luck. There will always be another day for them to buy a photo- there may not be another event for you to cover if water gets inside your camera.
 
I was taking some pics on a fun ride this weekend that had the odd shower. While I wasn't worried about the kit I was getting frustrated with how to stop the rain making the pics even worse than my usual fair.
It makes sensor noise seem so insignificant :)

im no expert, but not posted in a while, so thought I woudl use this as an escuse.

RE. Camera in the rain. Last time I had to shoot somethgin in the rain, I modded a loarge clear (tescos) freeezer bag.

camera in the cold, well me in the cold, I modded a pair of leather gloves to keep my pinkies warm (cut a slit in the shutter finger and just pop my finger through when i need to press ) I found shooting with gloves on felt wrong before that mod.

RE. the pic above. I am sure some of the experts are going to have a great idea to fix that. I woudl image the easy way woudl be slower shutter speed so that the raid drops arnt frozen, but that of course wont help much with your chosen subject, because you need a fast shutter to capture the horses without blur.

Software wise, have you tried noise ninja (or similar) on it, not what it is designed for, but a bit of tweaking mihgt help. other than that I think a painstakingly long spot removal and horse reconstruction would help.

I just had a little go at it, and yeah spot removal will do it, but its going ot take a while.

I personal would just do the horse and rider. If you dont like that look, maybe consider doing a slight blur on everything else and create som fake DOF

Just raided mums kitchen draw - here's one I made earlier - well 2mins ago.

Cheers for the idea - its pretty nifty and its saved my lots of doller.

Made using Large Wilko Freezer Bags and Eleastic Bands!!...chicken dinner!

right, lots of freezer bags in my kitchen so wil try that - BUT ive had another good idea ...... what about the pull on leg gaiters that hikers wait .... ? Might do the job :)
