Shooting fireworks (Cathrin wheel) and sparklers

Hey guys, having a wireworks night the some friends and all our kids 2mora night. And advice/tips for shooting the sparklers and a cathrinwheel. Will be using my d3100 with either my 50 1.4 or sigma 17-70? Thanks dave

a tripod can be useful for this sort of thing and either lens should do but the 17 - 70 might serve you better

camera settings i would go for F8 - F11 , 100 iso and 4 - 8 second exposure
if you have a remote shutter release use that too but it won't do too much harm if you havn't

wide angle lenses are essential for large firework displays but setting a few fireworks of in the garden doesn't really need it

Thanks, have got a sigma 10-20 (thinking of selling for a 70-200 2.8 or similar) but only looking to do some sparkler/light painting with the kids and always wanted to try and capture a cathrinwheel.

i think a wide angle lens will put you a little too close to the fireworks you'll need a little distance just to be safe
