Is it possible to by pass in camera storage and have images recorded to an external hard drive / pc?

Camera is a 5d II
 
I believe that with the Canon software it is possible. As far as I remember, you can toggle an option to write to the camera's card when shooting tethered.
 
Yes, think the Canon software does it (look for tethering option) or I use Capture One. Not sure if you can using Lightroom.
 
Naive question and I know I should RTFM, but how so you connect the camera to the storage device / laptop? Is just the case of installing the CAnon software and then plugging in via a USB cable?

yeah theres a tutorial for lightroom I wrote in the tutorial section, works without it too

to shoot straight to an external hd wft has usb ports will also tether wirelessly
 
well worth keeping a cf card in the camera when shooting tethered, just in case you're taking the perfect shot and the usb cable flies out at that second... or your laptop crashes or tether software fails... etcetcetc

1. Connect camera via USB
2. Start EOS Utility.
3. Select 'Remote Shooting'
4. Go!

yep and LR will 'not import duplicates' so just run the cards through it :D
 
It depends. I've tried with a 5m and a 3m cable, and both times it said 'a USB device has not been recognised'. That might be because I bought the cheapest, nastiest cable I could find though :D

5m is the absolute maximum length I think, but it probably varies from camera to camera, and computer to computer!

I use 2 x 5 meter USBs with a repeater between the two and the Canon software. Add on the 1 meter cable connected from the camera to the first USB extention, I shoot with a total of 11 meters without any problem.
 
If you have Lightroom 3 Beta 2 it has a a tethered shooting option. Not every camera supported though. Failing that the Canon software that comes with the camera works fine.
 
If you buy the wireless file transmitter for the camera, it also has a usb port. You can then connect the camera via USB lead to an external hard drive in your back pocket and walk around all day taking pics/HD video and storing the data on the hard drive.

EDIT; no other software required
