When shooting, does anyone have a checklist they run through in their mind? The reason I ask, is that being new to photography I often take some shots and then realise something like ISO is set wrong, or some other setting is wrong.

Any advise appreciated

Yep.

#1 Check settings
#2 Take shot

It's something that comes with practice and time, don't kick yourself over it, everyone does it. It's all to easy to want to grab something quickly only to find your camera is setup all wrong.

Make a habit of checking your camera every time you move from one lighting condition to another.

Been at it for over 30 years and I still make those mistakes, I just don't have an ordered mind...

I have a ritual of checking everything in the bag before I head out for a job.

This includes:
Checking for dust on the sensor
Checking the lenses don't have fingerprints, etc. on them.
Checking batteries for camera/flash
Checking memory cards are there and formatted.
Checking camera settings (ISO, mode, WB) are on something sensible

Before I go out I just check that I have got everything ready to go in my bag with suitable battery charge. Also check the lens for fingerprints and smudges beacuse most of the photography I do is in low light so it's hard to see properly sometimes.

Then I just check all the settings before shooting. I'm quite good about having the settings all right, don't usualy shoot with wrong ones (although have done a few times).

I think you'll build your own checklist over time. You'll get fed up making the same mistakes and start remembering to check first.
I'm new to photography too, but now i'm using the camera lots, i'm learning what it can and cant do and what to check before pressing the button. And if you do miss something, So what! its digital, adjust the settings and press the button again. :D

I personally (right or wrong) make sure i have the correct WB setting, an ISO setting the suit the light. Then i keep my eye on the exposure meter in the bottom right of the viewfinder. If there is something wrong it will show there. :D

Water, food, magazines, pistol, helmet, CBA, cameras...that's about it, really...the camera settings stay pretty much the same - since I always shoot on manual, I'm constantly checking those anyway.
