Hi there

I am getting to grips with my 450d

but i mainly be using it during the day.

Going to a night rally the weekend and i have no idea what to expect

Any advice on settings please

Only got a 18-55 lens to use

i been using the "TV settings" and playing with the iso/shutter speed

I notice that upping the iso to 800 and 1600 made the image brighter and was going to use about 1/25 on the shutter speed with moving cars

But advice me if i wrong and what better to do

Many thanks

Phil

im no expert,

the 450D isnt very good at high iso's lots of noise well there is on mine, processing your shots afterwards will help a bit

a tripod will help but with lack of light and the kit lens longer shutter speeds will be needed which for fast moving cars in low light isnt good, only thing that might help is to pan when you take your shots

i dont think the onboard flash will be good enough either

like im said im no expert this is just my input, i would like to know more form a more exp's tog also!

It might sound a silly comment, but it depends on exactly how dark...

If you are shooting rally cars in the middle of nowhere with no street/track lighting you aren't going to get much other than headlights even if you crank the ISO all the way up.

The only way you will see more than that is to have some other light source to illuminate the cars.

Also worth noting if you use flash then you will freeze the action... however your onboard flash is only good to about 11 feet, so you'd need a proper external flash to make any impact.

I bought the 450D as an upgrade from the 350D for its low light ability. Paired with the right lens, it works pretty well for portraits.

However, moving subjects is a different matter. Use ISO 1600 and adjust the exposure towards +2 to see if that helps. You can use Noise Ninja to try and compensate afterwards. Oh yes, and shoot in RAW

I'd recommend a monopod over a tripod.

Your other option is to buy a new lens ;)
