Hi all

In October I'm going on a tour of Italy with friends. What I'd like to know is if anyone here has good advice or suggestions on how to get the most of the trip (shooting wise).

We land in Milan and go straight to Lake Garda, then onto Venice, Florence, Pisa, Rome, Pompeii (if we have the time) then back to catch the plane at Milan.

I'm particularly looking forward to seeing Rome, and I'm buying SD cards like they're going out of fashion to cover all the snapping involved. I'm going to be taking just 2 lenses - A Sigma 18-200 OS & a Sigma 10-20. I'm thinking of buying a flash (SB-600), but not sure I'll be able to use it in many places? (the Pantheon looks an interesting place but it's SO dark - can I use flash? Will it be a waste of time?)

So any advice will be greatly appreciated on your part. If there are any places that aren't on the typical tourist route, that would be good to know too. (although we're going with an Italian...)

Thanks in advance ;)

You'll love it!! I've just got back from a few days in Cinque Terre which is a short distance from Pisa and I would definitely recommend it.....very photogenic. I'm just running out the door but will add some links to my pics from there later on. Lucca is very nearby and is a small fortified city with a similar feel to Sienna (another highly recommended stop)

We also spent two weeks doing the north of Italy last Christmas. We chose to do Lake Como instead of Garda as it is known for being more scenic.....it was awesome........got some great snaps (again, i'll post a link to my shots for you)

I'll give you a more detailed run down later on.

you are in for a treat, we are just back from Tuscany and must say that Florence, Pisa, Lucca and my favourite San Gimeano with its towers are all heaven for the photographer...last year we did Rome and drove down to pompei, again heaven for the photographer...why didnt I take any pictures..because Ryan airs baggage allowance is abysmal so my gear stayed at home and I just took my old canon G3......You will have a great time.

edit: just as an afterthought, if I would advise any particular bit of kit it would be a wide andgle lens because of the narrow streets and tall buildings.

Hi,
If you have the time the Amalfi Coast is not far from Pompei, is heaven for a photographer and not just because i am originally from there. :)

Ciao

The traditional choice for shooting in Italy is a Lupara ;)

Maybe you should drop a PM to Battlestar (Paolo)....he lives in Northern Italy.

If you visit Pisa don't forget to get a friend to strike the ubiquitous "holding up the tower" pose . . . .
Seriously, the tower is the obvious attraction in Pisa, but have a bit of a mooch around the surrounding area - there are lots of little photogenic nooks and crannies. .

Pompeii is wonderful - I came away with over 800 captures . . .

Rome is ok, but a little too busy for my liking - I was paranoid about getting my gear stolen or being pickpocketed. Although nothing happened I think it had a negative effect on my photography - I tended to keep my camera in my bag rather than around my neck.

The little back alleys and the harbours of Sorrento were a joy, as was Capri ( outrageously expensive though ! ! ) and the Imalfi coast - any photographer would be overjoyed to be plonked there with a camera and plenty of memory cards . . .

Florence is just my favourite town in the whole world - a wonderful place, with so much subject matter for the photographer I couldn't even begin to name it . . . .

Thanks Bob for the pointer - I'll send him a message later

Thanks too, Stevie for your comment. I'll remember what you said about Rome (although we're going with, amongst others, a Sicilian and a fire fighter who's built like a brick loo :D) Boy, I can't wait to get there! (note to self: must buy yet MORE memory cards)

Thanks all and please keep coming back with advice and comments - it's much appreciated...
