Hi all.

I am going to a golf day which is being run by my brothers business. I am new to photography ( a few months in ). I have a Sony slt A35 with kit lens 18-55mm and a minolta (big beercan) 70-300mm. I just need some tips so i am able to get some good shots. Im doing it to just get some experience but would really appreciate some help, etc different lens or more equipment.

Thanks in advance

Hi Jamie
This would probably get more hits in Sports Talk.
I'd imagine you might want to take posed shots before they start out.
There isn't a lot of action shots unless you can get them to pose after they've hit and as I understand most golfers don't like to be disturbed when playing/hitting the little ball with the metal stick.

Ok thanks for that, where can I find sport talk in TP. Is it under feedback and critique

Its a sub form of Talk Photography : Speciality Discussion.
May be a Mod will move it??

Good shots there mate. How big was the lens you were using. Did u use a tripod for any shot?

It was a 70-300 is and to be honest I think a 70-200 would be long enough because you can get pretty close to the action.Did them all hand held probably not a sport for tripods

That's gd cos I got a 70-300. I'll post some pics after I done it, hopefully go well. It's only to gain experience and practice anyway

I would personally catch the swing right at the end, when the golfer pauses
and also if they're in the bunker, the sand kicked up by the wedge gives some nice frozen motion
don't use flash :P you'll be lynched :)
don't be too close as they'll hear the click
also don't be afraid to go wide. I think golf is about the ethos, not just the 'action'
a nice article I read on this subject had some lovely wide shots, plenty of dead space.
I think pictures of golfers concentrating are a bit dull, it's all in the shot I think (not pun intended). also go RAW and process them for vibrant colours. esp being new to DSLRs it'll be an education (which I still sorely need myself :))
hope that helps without being way off base or being patronising
post when you've got your shots to share too!

I shot one about a year ago most of my shots were taken between 70 and 130mm from about 10m away I think, you need to leave a bit of space as they all point their sticks in different directions after they hit the ball, some go up, others wrap it round the back of the neck others it comes down quite low with their hands really high.

Rules are no shooting on the swing, you need to capture the finish of the swing quite quick and follow the course dress code which is usually no trainers or jeans and don't forget the 2nd pair of eyes for the back of your head as balls come in from everywhere.

I'm not sure if your shooting to sell but one that sold well for me was a team/group shot before on the first tee or after on the last green just do the one that has a nice background the after ones were more popular as the people had grown to know each other while they dragged their bats and balls around on their walk and it showed in the photos.

Diz Matt and little John thanks for all ur advice it will defiantly be a good learning experience. Iv been on a lot of these golf days working for my brother running them so all good with dress code but yes defiantly need a good second pair of eyes . Iv had a ball hit the buggy when Iv been setting people off the first tee before. I'll post some of the pics after. Thanks for all the advice and none of it was patronising every bit help when your beginning.

Good luck I have a golf day next weds which I will take some photos for...

All went fine some pics at start weren't to well positioned but rest were fine. Took group photos and then sat on a tee block and took photos of each player taking there tee shot. Will upload a couple of pics but wondering where I upload them?? Upload on this thread of not ?
