Can anyone give me any pointers on how to get the best photos, as far as im aware the gig is just the one band.

My camera is a sony alpha 200, any pointers on which setting to use will be much appreciated, im unsure on what the lighting at the venue will be like though.

(If a modertor sees this post could you do me a favour and change the title to band not bang :) )

 I knew id get that, damn why cant I change the title

 wonder what was on my mind

Thanks for changing it

Anybody else have any pointers? Its not like a big stage with a croud and photographer pit, just like a hall and a small stage

What should I get picture of? the whole group? individuals in the band? the equiptment? the audience?

Also should I shoot in raw?

I used my 50mm f1.8, fully open, at a gig I recently shot. It was my first time. If I remember rightly, the ISO was at 1600, and shutter speeds between 125 and 250. I'm pretty sure that's all mentioned in the guide posted above.

I would definitely say you should shoot in RAW. I had a lot of little exposure and WB adjustments to make to my shots.

Would definitely advise shooting in raw and as for type of pictures to get - well it really does depend on the type of shots that you want. Nobody can tell you the whether to concentrate on one type or another, it's all down to what you want to achieve.
If you are not sure then take photos of everything and everyone - the beauty of digital is that you can take loads and delete the crap ones.
Try different settings and type of shots but most of all just try and enjoy the experience.
Go on Flickr and look at the music and gig shots on there and see what type of shots appeal to you the most and then you've got something to aim for!
At the end of the night you will have learnt a lot and will probably have more questions :)

Cheers guys, will let you all know how it goes ;)

You're making me blush! :D

Credit given where it's due - the guide that you wrote was great and a big help. To be honest, I haven't visited your site for a while and had forgotten how good you are - love the shots of Karen O :)

Must make mental note to visit your site more often :)
