Hi all
Heres my first attempt at shooting the moon and also my forst attempt at uploading a photo to TP
C & c welcome

Hi Peter and welcome :) Congrats on uploading the photo too!

Sadly the shot is very blurred .... Was it hand held or perhaps a slow shutter speed? ... :thinking:
 
There are heaps of excellent tips on here for shooting the moon and stars :)

Have a look at the Redsnapper tripods - they're well thought of and more to the point, relatively cheap. :)

Take this up to 800 or more ... the D5000 has the capability to cope. Then have a look at your results to see where they become unacceptably noisy.
 
As others have said it is a bit blurred, dont get down though.

With regards lenses and cameras etc it really depends on what type of lunar shots you want.

I experimented taking moon pictures with my old S100fs bridge camera and didnt think the results were too bad, considering!

Not a massive amount of detail, but not bad for a bridge camera!

It's just a question of playing around with the settings till you get the hang of it! :)

not a bad first attempt, although it is blurred, I can easily make out Clavius and Copernicus though. Without a pod (my redsnapper is great for the money) or IS, you're going to need to push the ISO to get a steady shot... although that will almost certainly appear noisy. I would normally recommend keeping the ISO at minimum however, as the moon will really show up the noise, especially the amount you'll need to crop with 300mm.

Hiya Peter,

I remember all too well the first time I took a shot of the moon, and I was so pleased with it!

You have done well here, considering it is your first attempt. You have captured some of the detail which is good. My first go was a big white ball that peeps needed sunglasses to view :lol:

I have moved on since then (:lol: hopefully folk don't need DG's now).....and I don't mean to ride on the back of your post ..... but this is what you could eventually get (and it is far from the c&c that I still require), but I hope it gives you some confidence and inspiration to carry on.

Im an amateur aswell I took a few pics of the moon a while ago and just remember them being awful

Here's some I just took with my D5000, 300mm and a tripod

Think that last one might be over the image size limits for the forum! You might wish to crop it a bit to reduce the amount of solid black.
 
Its automatically been reduced to 800x531 so shouldnt be a problem... but yes image would be better cropped :)

OMG!!! Talk about 'next door' ..... that is absolutely brilliant! Especially on the dark side of the moon (teeehee Pink Floyd were onto something there). The left handside (or our righthand side looking at the pic) looks a little soft, but then I suppose that is to be expected from the brilliant light radiation.

But wow I could spend ages looking at that image. :thumbs:

The RHS of the moon as we're looking at it Dawn, has very low surface contrast... meaning it's really hard to pick out features.. in some ways, even more so, when you have the terminator to contrast against.

Indeed, hence why I thought this image was GREAT! More detail than I have seen on many. :)

Not to mention, how difficult it is to get the detail closer to full moon with the illumination.

So very well done Oggy!

BTW my fav on this image is the lower left section - it has such character!

Nice first effort.
Lots of people see a full moon and get the camera out but personally I steer clear as you really wont get much detail because of lack of shadows.
If your lens has IS you should be perfectly capable of getting decent shots without a tripod.

I would guess mostly cropped.... ( 18MP helps with cropping :-) )

I used AF, works fine, I also used spot metering to make sure the moon was exposed properly.
