weekly Shirleyr's 52 ~ 2016 ~ Week 52 ~ Celebration

(A)Lone - Good use of shallow DoF. Is this a crop down from a bigger image as it doesn't feel as sharp as perhaps it could be.
Fauna - Great colours. Interesting catch light in the eye, nicely sharp and a deliberate tight crop. (y)

Week 32 Static Taken with a long lens in dull light.

Hi Molly and welcome :)

I learned loads when I first did this in 2009 and knew virtually nothing about photography and had just got my first DSLR.

You'll find the people in this group very friendly and helpful.

The first editing programme I used was acdsee. It's was free and very easy to use.

I like your Static photo and the leading line of the pylons. The only suggestion I would make is to try a contrast boost as it can sometimes get rid of the cloudiness n pics taken on a dull day.

Blimey, all those pylons and a hidden valley, civilisation down there perhaps. Thanks Molly.

Hi Molly.
When you say Corel Photoshop, do you mean PaintShop Pro?

Love that little cottage on the lhs contrasted against those massive pylons.

Thanks for the comments, I too like the little cottages on the mountain, in good weather they are usually white. I use Corel Paintshop Prox6 there are a lot of features I don't understand.
A little village of Porthmadog where I was standing, bird watching as ever. The lens I used was a 400mm f5,6L, not really for landscapes but sort of got lucky.

Like the idea for the theme Molly, don't know if it helps but you can get the Google Nik software for free at the moment. Loads of online tutorials in youtube

Got there in the end then Molly
Although one last tip, the link you posted, is the link that needs to be added to the "Box" once you highlight the word "link" and click the chain symbol.
:)

Nice idea for the theme. I actually find the building a bit of a distraction. I think a portrait layout would work better here just to isolate in the pylons.
Tried it with portrait and it got rid of the cottage, thanks.

Thanks, I know what you meant, the young man was useless he sent his wife and we sorted of skipped the link and I think the photo was too big.

Yes, she seems to be enjoying herself catching the frisbee. Well captured in mid air!

nice action shot though a little soft and a couple of years ago, lovely dog

Nice action shot Molly :)

Good action shot, nicely caught ... but looks to me like it needs levelling: BGs a bit wonky.

2010 this photo was taken and she is still as fit. The background is a bit wonky and should be much clearer.

Hi Molly,
Static - It's a tad noisy, down to the low light no doubt. Also a bit lacking in contrast.
I can see others have suggested various editing software, so I'll not chime in with suggestions, but it is worth playing with them on shots like this to see how you can improve the OOC shot.

Game - Much better shot, you've caught the action well and the lighting is much better :)

Yes, works well for the theme. Did you crop the photo a lot, it looks quite grainy on my screen...

My real name is Shirley, my blog link is underneath my posts. That is strange by blog link was there and now its gone.

Gulls do look serene in flight like that....unless they start screeching!
I agree it is a little noisy.

Hi Shirmolly ;)

Serene - It is a tad on the noisy side, but iso 640 on a 7D!!! I've had noise at iso 100 using my old 7D trying to capture against a blue sky, so actually fair play :) Presumably it's quite a crop. Certainly fits the bill ;)

I don't do BIF shots, but from a technical perspective I *think* I would have tried a larger aperture and lower shutter speed to reduce the iso. f/5.6 and 1/2000th would have gained you a stop and a half, so that would have been around iso 200 for the same exposure, but should still have been fast enough to stop motion blur.

I call that synchronised Serenity. Nice take on the theme Shirley.

Thanks for this advice, been struggling with this issue for a while now, does that mean not to go on AV but M. By the way Molly has left.

It's difficult to give advice on a subject I don't shoot (so I could be wrong), but perhaps...
Use TV Mode and set the shutter speed to something that will avoid motion blur. 400mm on a 7D would be 1/640th or above as a rule of thumb, but I don't know if there are recommendations for birds.
You can then let the aperture and iso float and let the camera's exposure meter work out the best setting, however, doing that you might want to make use of the 'max iso' setting, which will constrain the iso to whatever you deem to be the top value you want to go to.

But it *really* does depend on what you're shooting, there is no one size fits all, it's all about getting and making the best of the light.
The mantra I try to live by is keep the iso as low as possible. but of course there are external reasons why you can't on many occasions.

I understand what you mean, I'm off very soon to look for Barn Owls so can try it on TVmode. Thanks very much for taking the time to explain.

certainly black and white, tighter crop to the right and top as you have on the two other sides so it ends up square
