Sheffield locations? And what to shoot on first ever walkabout?

Bit of a newbie who wants to get out there and take some shots. (my little girl at home has been my only real subject to this point).

But I think I'd just like to get out on my own having a walkabout taking shots.

I'm thinking of just walking about the town centre with my 35mm and 18-55 kit lens.

Do you think i'd need my tripod? Should I invest in a monopod? Or should hand held suffice?

Sorry if these sound dumb questions, but i've never ventured out on a "shoot" before so its all new.

Finally, if anyone knows Sheffield, any suggestions of a good area to concentrate on?

If shooting in the light I don't think you'd need to take any extra legs around, should be easy enough just to handhold everything, especially as it's your first time out so to speak. I can't recommend any areas but once you're out just take pictures of anything that gets your fancy, play with different subjects.

Yeah, was planning going down during the day for starters......

sounds sillly, but its a bit daunting when you've not done it before... :thinking:
 
I've only been to sheffield once, but I did notice there's a big wheel there, and a great glass building, like a winter garden, behind the Novotel. On a day like today, there'll probably be some al fresco dining going on.

And it doesn't sound silly, it's not something I've done yet.
 
They took the wheel away around Christmas time. :(
Yes, the Winter Gardens are pretty nice.

Suppose its being confident walking about with the camera and also pointing at people?

Yes Nick, but much has changed. They were up for government redevelopment as they are actually "listed buildings" and the Urban Splash group got the gig. But the whole development has been beset by funding issues I believe (there was a TV programme on a while ago about it all)

No offence to anyone who lives up that part of town, but I wouldn't want to be walking round there on my own with a £400 camera around my neck! :(
 
yeah that's the down side of course of run down areas. still would make a fantastic study if you could hire some security guards :lol:

If it's street photography you want what about outside the uni or hallam as you will get some interesting characters and probably be less inclined to get the hump?

I'm in the same boat as you Zarch, living in Sheffield and having just taken to photography, I am wondering which locations may be suitable for a walkabout shoot as I am getting bored of shooting pasta sauce jars etc and things around the house. I've been reading a couple of books on photography basics, techniques and methods etc and I'm now eager to get out and shoot! I suppose it depends on what you fancy shooting though. There is some nice architecture around the peace gardens and winter gardens which would make for some interesting shoots. I was planning on trying a few shots around there at night though when all the funky lights are on. If you fancy some landscapes/nature there is always the benefit of having the peak district close by. Chatsworth house and gardens may be a good shout. If you come up with any ideas let me know though! :thumbs:
 
If anyone is looking for good locations in Sheffield, I recommend going into the cathedral. There's some lovely shots to be had and I've never had any fuss taking my camera & tripod in and around. Usually pretty quiet, too!
 
hi, what sort of things are you thinking of photographing? theres a graffitti jam at sharrow ball court this sat (thinking of going myself), theres loads of wildlife and landscapes near by,or sit in the peace gardens and fire away..must be loads of old disused factorys etc down neepsend too
 
If you don't mind a bit of a drive you could try going up to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park near Barnsley. You only have to pay for parking and there's some interesting things to practise on.

I post a thread with a few pictures I took whilst there in the General Sharing section.
 
Highly recommend "The Five Wiers Walk" and Canal Basin. Over the Park Square roundabout start near the Hilton Hotel, old barges, old steel works and finishes at Meadowhall, if you don't fancy the walk back theres the Supertram back to City Centre.

Assuming no car. Winter gardens, train station fountains, the centre of town on a saturday is good for entertainers, supertram to the hospital takes you to a great park. The 272 bus service stops outside the fox house inn.

For those of you who have been away from sheffield for a while you would get quite a shock at how changed it is. Egg box is gone for a start and they have concentrated on making the station and up behind the crucible all posh. I didn't go back for nearly 10 years and didn't recognise the place to the point where I stood in the street outside the cathedral all confused going "which way is the moor?".

I used to live on the Wy (estate behind it) and I would have been worried about having anything worth £400 in my house.
