Sheep etc.

A trip to Bentham today for another in-lamb sale. Mostly Dalesbreds and Herdwicks.

You can just about make out the auction mart in this shot I took on my way home over the fells. Hint - look for the parked up livestock trailers. ;)

I've been trying a new-to-me camera these last two sessions and I'm still fumbling with the controls. I've not missed anything I regret (yet) though.

A bit of a mishmash of shots here.

I'm unsure about this one.

Love the shot of the rosettes on the fleece.

I think the one you are unsure of works well. I think you could crop in tighter, the message for me is in the eyes and the hands.

Thanks. The rosettes on is my pic of the day.

Not sure about a crop as I don't want to lose the sheep as it gives context, as does the hint of red rosette.

Two sales using my new gear and I'm still learning how to set it up and where to put my fingers and thumbs. But I'm getting there. One thing is certain, for these events the lens is pretty much ideal.

The in-lamb sale I've been waiting for. The one with Lonks. Here they are being scanned to confirm that they are indeed in-lamb.

There are pre-sale shows for four breeds. Naturally I concentrated on one the Lonks and Gritstones.

_A730652.jpg

There were a lot of Whitefaced Woodlands. Clitheroe held the breed society's annual sale for the first time last September and seems to have become the centre for their sales.

The sale commences.

The ring was packed.

There'll be sales for ewes with lambs at foot coming up. I'll go to a few to keep my eye and hand in before the show season starts at the end of May. And I might get out on-farm with a bit of luck. I have some landscapes to shoot for my Lonk book too.

Thanks for looking. :)

I made the most of a dry start to the day today by going looking for Lonks and scouting out location for a potential landscape shot for my book. The sheep I found, the landscape view didn't work out - but there were Lonks about!

The first flock are pretty tame and on seeing a person get out of a vehicle near the gate to the moor they come to investigate. This gave me a chance for some closer views than I usually get.

At the second location I made another attempt at a shot with turbines in the background. And failed yet again to get what I'm looking for. I guess I need to get further back from the sheep, using a longer lens so the turbines aren't as tall in the frame.

This tup wasn't bothered by my presence but didn't stop eating and lift his head up once!

I've been told that a switch of systems can affect the 'look' of pictures, but I'm not seeing it. Has anyone noticed a change in my last four posts here?

I'll review when I get home, using a screen instead of the phone.

A couple of days photographing sheepdogs trying to get to grips with the new camera system's focusing system. I'm getting there. Most of the action shots are crops as I don't have a lens longer than 300mm FF equivalent. yet!

Friday was auction day:

Best shot of the day IMO taken at 20mm. :D

Saturday was trial day. It started dry then turned to rain and I left - half way home the sun was cracking the flags!

Finally got around to looking. Occasionally the images taken in lower light can be a little more washed out, needing a bit of contrast and maybe a little clarity added, although this is also a feature from before but just a little less so. Otherwise they're 'your' images still.

Thanks Toni. It might be a case of tweaking some settings either in-camera or, more likely, in my Lightroom import preset. Or just adding more contrast in post. I guess it's only an issue when using a mix of cameras' pics together. And even then most people probably won't notice!

A composite from yesterday's Pennine Interclub Nursery final.

First and second (he ran two dogs) individual place went to Ricky Hutchinson.

Here he is shedding two sheep from four.

More pics tomorrow.

One of my colleagues drove 50 miles to take part in a Sheepdog Trial - and he was one of the favourites.

Wasn't until he opened the back door of the landrover that he realised he had brought the wrong dog along with him.

I bet he felt a fool.

More to keep learning my new gear than anything I went to another auction today. two rings:prime sheep for the butchers and sheep with lambs at foot. I look at a lot of this sort of photography and everyone seems to photograph people using 70-200 zooms. I gave it a go today but it doesn't do much for me.

_A731790.jpg

_A731818.jpg

_A731810.jpg

I was convinced there was a photo where the sheep were being scanned out. But I couldn't find it.

_A750773.jpg

_A750783.jpg

_A750800.jpg

So I tried to get some sheep in or leaving the ring. Again without much success.

Time to give the auctions a rest unless there's something special going on. I went looking for sheep in fields on my way home.

If you ever come across one on its back, unable to get up, go and flip it over. otherwise it could expire. Naturally enough, by the time I'd got out of the car, taken a couple of snaps and gone through the gate to this one she'd righted herself!
