Sheep book project

What's the intended paper weight (gsm)?
I've not settled on that yet. This test copy was 120gsm but I was thinking 150gsm from my first test copy. Of course that would make 200 pages even more problematic! The main issue is that being perfect bound I'll have to increase the indent from the gutter, particularly for the text sections.

My feeling's that at 120gsm the finished book won't have much 'presence' in the hand, & will seem too slim & floppy, even at 200pp.

But I thought your aim now was to reduce the page count, which tips the balance even more.

I'd be looking at 150 - 180gsm. Feel's important - both for ongoing personal satisfaction but also for first impressions as people pick one up somewhere with a view to buying one.

Yes a heavier paper will be stiffer, which impinges towards the spine, but would make the book more of a 'thing' in its own right, & something worth having.

Just my ten bob's worth. Do you want my sort code?

I agree that heavier is better. Both for making the book 'a thing' and to stop photos showing through. (y)

How about this?

Lancashire is a county more associated with the industrial revolution than pastoral farming, yet its uplands gave rise to a sheep as hardy as the people who breed it there still.

I've tightened a lot up this weekend. Swapped some photos, doubled some up on a page, cut some out altogether and reduced the page count by 18. It doesn't look any weaker for it. With the few more photos I'm aiming to take and the remaining writing I'm hoping this might just be enough.

Keeping an eye on this as I have a book project (with c 100 pages) in the pipeline.
