There are minor public roads all around the airfield, look for the approach lights but don't park in front of the crash gates please!!

That was taken with my Tamron 70-300 settings were f11 at 1/125, iso100 and focal length of 148mm. I was on the roof of the old ATC tower, the one used now is in the background.

There are lots of viewing points as the airfield is quite open, the long runway runs north/south but the one that gets most use is the southwesterley one. There's spotters out there most days, we don't get many fixed wing visitors but we do get the odd Merlin, Chinook, Puma and Apache etc. Shawbury is the helicopter training school for all three services so lots of fixed wing visitors would be too disruptive.

Hope I haven't misled you but you won't get a shot like that from outside the wire - I work on the base.

lol - now you tell me. I was arrested and detained, and body searched...

Just Kidding!, I didnt have a chance to have a look this weekend. The weather was (still is) miserable, and the v-fest on, thought i would stay away from roads as much as I could.

Wont get a decent shot with a 70-300mm?

Depends where you go, this week we're on late starts day flying 1400-1800 plus night flying so it will be fairly quiet. Have a look on google earth, there are B roads all round the camp and you should be able to get some decent shots of arriving and departing aircraft. Unless they're on instrument approaches, our helicopters dont't land on or take off from the runways, we use the grassed area to the west side mostly, that's because most of our helicopters have skids not wheels. Apart from the two A109's and the A139 that is.
