How do people shave?

For years bought the expensive 5 bladed Gillette blades and worked ok. I have tried disposables but cut me to pieces. Last year I bought a safety razor, brush etc and while I quite liked the experience, find I needed 3 passes to get a good shave and would have lots of little cuts as a result, especially around upper lip. Now gone back to the Gillette stuff. Any of these online shaving products up to scratch (like Harrys)?
 
Just out of interest what razor and blades where you using that you didn't get on with. I'm an old style shaver and don't get those nicks and problems ?
 
I used Gillette from when I first started shaving. Back then, there was no lubricating strip, that's how long ago it was. I was always quite happy with the shave I got from them.

My shaving routine is, I bath or shower first, this softens my beard and I find gives a closer and easier, more comfortable shave. I shave every other day.

The Christmas before last, my wife bought me a Harry's kit, 4 blades, foam and an aftershave cream. I was blown away, it was and still is the closest shave I have ever had. A while back, I had a problem with the blades and the lubricating strip falling out after one shave, not good. I contacted Harrys, who sent me 8 blades, free of charge and also informing me there had been a bad batch.

All is good now and whilst I'm not knocking the Gillette stuff, it served me well, I just get on a lot better with the Harrys stuff and as long as it stays that way, I'll be sticking with them.

Think it was a Gillette safety razor and the blades were Gillette ones. First pass is ok but not too smooth, so lather again and normally a third time which is where I get the nicks.
 
When I was in my teens, a visiting Uncle suggested that I would soon need to start saving and strongly recommended that bought an electric shaver, which is what he used. From his experience once you start either wet shaving or dry, it is unlikely you would be able to change. So why would you want to waste so much time wet shaving. My father used to spend 20 mins shaving each day whereas a couple of minutes per day is fine for me with my Philips shaver. I have been very grateful for that advice about 60 years ago (over 200 days saved so far).

I've used these Wilkinson Blade Protectors for around thirty years.

I don't apply soap or foam, just plain tap water. I can't remember when I last had a nick. Most importantly, I've not had irritated skin since I started with these though, before changing to them, I had razor burn all the time. :(

Best thing is that I get up to twenty shaves from each one, often many more.

my goto which i have been doing for decades without change is a good razer mainly the wilkinson sword range and shaving in the shower with just plain dove soap
i found that if i popped in the shower and cleaned my teeth (in the shower) with the oral-b electric driver while getting toasty and wet that when i came to soap up and shave it has softened the bristles and i get a great shave and my blades last for absolutely ages.
 
I have been using Gillette Blue 2 disposals for years.
Found them really good
 
I have saved a fortune , Not shaved since I was 19 , 50 years later I am still fungus face.
 
Lately I've gone with a Full Set, but prior to this I was wet shaving with a nice razor and Lord blades, the latter would last about 10 shaves before being too blunted. Technique is everything in a wet shave. I'd not always do the whole process, but when time permitted it was very nice to use a pre-shave cream, then a hot towel for a couple of minutes, then a nice lather with a scented shaving soap or hemp oil soap, then the shave - upward strokes, then sideways strokes, then finally downward. By going in differing directions in three passes, but without dragging hard, I'd get a really close shave. Then wipe, cold towel, then after shave balsam, and finally an after shave if desired. Quite a faff for sure, but when you have time, it's a lovely feeling at the end.

I user two different Merkur razors, one open comb and one closed comb. Basically one has teeth in front of the blade the other has a bar. Long beard use the open comb, daily closed comb.
You more likely to get nicks with the open comb but you cal fell trees with it. The closed comb gives you a close shave with no nicks because the bar protects your face.
Gillette blades are rubbish and are the main cause of nicks and rash, they last no time at all. I use Japanese Feather blades that are incredibly sharp and stay that way for about 30-40 shaves.

I grew a beard about 12 years ago, so only shave the extremities a couple of times a week. :ROFLMAO:
 
50 year old Gillette safety razor with Feather blades, can’t remember the soap make but a nice brush I bought on holiday some years ago, most of the face and some of the head where a little hair still grows
 
I use Wilkis Hydro 3. They had a sale on three years ago, July 2021...the razors, too so I bought a shed load. I still have 21 blades and two razors left .They might outlast me..Lol

Btw. When I noticed the bathroomn sink water was emptying ever more slowly I cleaned the drain pipe. The problem was the 'gel' shaving cream. I've had no such problems since going over to foam.
 
The problem with shaving is that most men treat it as a chore, so they want to do it as quickly as possible and as cheaply as possible. They much prefer to spend their time and money pampering their cars instead of pampering themselves.
 
I can’t be bothered with elaborate shaving rituals. Mine is…

Wet face with hot water.

Apply supermarket own brand sensitive shaving gel.

Shave with supermarket own brand disposable razor.

That’s it. No nicks or cuts, takes a minimal amount of time. I used to dry shave with a Philishave but prefer wet shaving these days.

Expensive 5 blade Gillete blades here too, I upgrade every time they bring out a new one because I'm a sucker for things like that lol. I'm not sure the latest pro-glide is any better or worse than the previous itteration but the price difference isn't that great - they're all WAY over priced. I keep clean shaven, I get irritated if I grow anything over a shadow of stuble, so one blade will do me for a couple weeks at least.

I hate shaving but I'm another sort of happy Harry's user. It is the best razor I've had.
 
Lidl 5 blade razor, would rather go hairy than pay Gillette style prices.

I've used Gillette Mach3 for years, always happy with the results.....

Stopped using shaving foam/gel years ago and started using shower gel instead when shaving.....

I only shave about once a week now, but when I do, it's with a "Harry's". I like their aftershave balm too. I have always had a fairly tough beard, but as Lindsay pointed out, technique is the key. My "problem area" is the corners of the lips, I find I have to put a finger into the corner of the mouth to stretch the skin to get a close shave there. I also have one area on my neck that never seems to shave as close as I'd like it.

I've tried electric razors but can't get on with them. Last time I grew a beard I got really dry skin in a number of places so had to shave it off.

Likewise, I have used the Lidl ones for longer than I can recollect. I do forget to throw them away sooner rather than later, so tend to do it when the razer becomes "unfriendly".
 
I’ve got a subscription with Harry’s and they send me new blades and shave gel periodically. I think they are good quality and vfm. You can get a trial set for just the cost of postage if you want to try first

Mine is 95% white with a hint of ginger.

I have two straight razors, one made by someone I know in the US and some lovely shaving soaps from a lady in the US. Oh and a badger hair brush. They only come out occasionally when I feel the need to treat myself to a relaxing shave otherwise it's a Bulldog razor and store bought gel.

I wet shave with a 20 odd year old Gillette Sensor razor (two blade) and Gillette gel on a Monday morning and use a Braun shaver (dry) the rest of the week, usually skipping Saturday and Sunday.
