Hi everyone....

Im looking for some tips how to best sharpen my subjects in my pictures in elements 11.

I usually use the high pass filter but maybe im not setting the radius high enough because I find they could still be sharper.

Are there any other better ways to sharpen I don't know about?

Thanks :)

What radius are you using? Too high a radius will have an effect more like a Clarity slider. I find that a radius of 3 pixels is pretty good with 16.2 MP photos from my Nikon D5100.

i have been using a radius between 1 to 1.2 pixels with my 10.1 MP photos.
I tried using a radius between 2 to 3 pixels now and that seems to make them look a bit better.

I duplicate the layer, add high pass, set it to overlay and add a layer mask and I only paint over the subject I want sharpened.

I will have a look at the guide, thanks :)

When using High Pass, I usually reduce the radius until most of the colour has gone and you see a mono line drawing, sort of. The smaller your file size, the less radius is generally needed. If this doesn't give the result you are after, try using soft light, hard light, pin light... quite a few of the blending options will give different results. You can also reduce the opacity of the sharpened layer before flattening.

Remember that different photos need different sharpening techniques. Usually a smaller photo (ie for web) will need more sharpening than something you plan to hang on a wall, and portraits often need different treatment than architecture shots, say.

And post-production sharpening can't recover a badly focussed or blurred exposure.

what about adjust sharpening? Is that any better or much the same as using high pass?

that's a good link thanks.
I guess I need to practice a bit more :)
