How much do people sharpen photo's in photoshop .. And which route to you use ..

I never know how far i can take it so the photo will print and look good ,
At the moment i use unsharpen mask ..
is High-Pass sharpening a better way to go about it ..

cheers

I prefer to use High Pass set with a pixel radius varying from 1.5 to 6. Any more than 6 and I believe that it becomes to obvious.
I then use blending modes overlay, soft or hard light normally at 100%

I guess it's also down to personal preference how much you sharpen.

Convert your picure to Lab colour

Choose the brightness channel

Unsharp at 150 0.5 1

Convert back to RGB

Works for me and you get less artifacts around the picture

There's lots of ways to sharpen images. For a portrait I make a selection from the red channel and sharpen using unsharp mask at around 300!! Works very well and is the method Photoshop Guru Guy Gowan uses.

Don't forget too add that really you are subtracting the red channel from the mask, as this is where most of the skin tones are.

I am a convert to Guy Gowan's technique too.

Cheers guy's

it's just not wanting to over do it .. I'll give a couple here a wirl and see how they look ..

I use smart sharpen on a duplicate layer, then change the blend mode to Luminosity. I can then use the opacity to adjust how much.

This is easiest. Or as a Smart Object and set the blending mode of the sharpening to Luminosity afterwards. Oversharpen and then turn down the opacity of the sharpening afterwards to get it just right. Smart sharpen is easiest and does as good a job as unsharp mask in most cases. Assess at 100% zoom for web output and 50% for print.
