sharpen using lr3

i was wondering how much sharpening should i use as i am new to lightroom, also should i use the noise reduction as when i sharpen the image it seems to get noisy. i read in a photo mag that all images should be sharpened to some degree is this right

The problem is different types of image will need different sharpening, eg a portrait may need less than a detailed landscape etc.
Then theres different sensors and sizes, and types of AA filter (a built in filter over the sensor) all these affect the sharpness of the original image.
When you add sharpening try holding doen the ALT key and dragging the masking slider, this masks out the sharpness from the less detailed areas so will help reduce noise in the sky etc.
