I have a 550D and Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 non VC plus a canon 60mm f2.8 for macro and as a kinda alternative for the 50mm.

I'm lookinf for a fast prime to keep weight down and use and a walk about prime. Contenders are the Siggy 24mm f1.8, Canon 28mm f1.8, Sigma 30mm f1.4 and Canon 35mm f2. There is no point having a f2.8 lens as i have that covered with the Tammy and the price difference would not be worth the little possible increase in IQ.

The Tammy is OK wide open but i'm hoping a f1.4 or f1.8 prime at say f2 or f2.2 will be much sharper. It's over to your opinion and please let me know if there are any lenses i have missed or if you think i'm being daft and should just use the Tamron. Budget up to 500 quid

Thanks

I have a Siggy 20mm f1.8 which I think is of similar construction to the 24mm. The fucus ring slides back and forwards between Auto and manual focus to stop you stripping the gears plus there's an AF/MF switch. I suppose the arrangement makes sense but I think USM/HSM is so much better as with it you get the option of full time manual focus override.

As the difference between 24 and 30mm isn't that great of those listed I'd bypass the Canon 28mm (as I've read that it is an old design and not that good and bettered by the Siggy 28mm f1.8) and go for the Siggy 30mm f1.4. The only drawbacks of that lens being that it's APS-C only, has focus curviture (if that's the right term but personally I never found that to be an issue even at the widest apertures) and the focus ring feels a bit gritty when focusing manually. Mine did anyway, I tried another in a shop once and it felt just the same. Positives are that it's a compact lens and you get HSM and full time manual focus. Mine was really sharp too.

The siggy 30mm sounds good!!

Another vote for the sigma 30mm 1.4, I've got one and love it, very sharp, good field of view, great in low light. Get one!

To echo above, Sigma 30mm 1.4 is a peach of a lens

Incredibly sharp, and very nice bokeh :p

The 30mm f1.4 is lovely, however not very wide as it is roughly equivalent (i know about the technical ins and outs but lets leave that to one side!) to a 50mm standard in FF. I have one but quite frankly don't really use it so it may well be appearing in the classifieds soon! (Please no PMs etc as I have no interest in selling outside of the classifieds.)

My favoured focal length is 24mm but there is not much about at 24mm apart from the canon 24mm f2.8 (no point seeing as i have the Tammy 17-50) Canon 24mm f1.4 WAY out my price range and the Sigma 24mm f1.8 with would be ideal but it generally gets a poor rap. About 28-30mm would be fine so the Siggy 30mm f1.4 sounds like the best choice.
