Shared folder in home network

When making a home network with Vista... why doesnt it create a sharing folder?

I made a home network a year or so ago.. the other 3 pc's are win xp and when it creates the network they each have a sharing folder which can be seen by the other people and shared (obviously!)

But the vista one which I have now joined to the network.. can print from the network... but it has no shared folder in it. If someone else clicks on it, it is empty and I cannot make a shared folder either by "right click" and "new"...when looking at it in the network.

Have I done something wrong or do I have to create one myself?

Hi Janice, just been thru all these problems myself with my new laptop running vista, eventually got everything working, I'm no computer expert but you might look at these:
1) xp uses Shared folders
2) equivalent in vista is Public folder
3) for networks, xp defaults to mshome as the workgroup
4) vista default is workgroup
5) have to playabout with my Norton firewall to get it onto my network.

Thanks kevin. i have all that working... everyone can see each other and the vista can see into the xp shared folders and the xp machines can see each other and also the vista machine.. but when they click on the vista machine in the network there is no folder in there to keep stuff in. I will do a google about the public folder..

ok, thi smight be granny sucking eggs....but can you create a new folder in 'my computer' and then set that to shared in Vista?

You will need to create a shared folder in Vista i believe, just a matter of right clicking on one and choose share (has been a while since i used Vista though)

It's ok.........I had to turn on public folder sharing in the network/sharing part of the control panel! Couldnt see the wood for the trees!!
