I've just started getting into photography and I'm umming and arring as to whether to take my DSLR to New York or not with me on Saturday.

Just don't want it getting stolen!!! I've still got my little Sony Cybershot that I can take, so shall I take the DSLR or not????

Help me make a decision!!!

If you don't take it you'll wish you had. Just take care and keep your wits about you and don't wander round open mouthed looking like a tourist

Deffo take it :)

Just make sure its insured though.

Without a doubt take it...New York is amazing to photography (not that i've been there) but when I do go I will be taking as many photos as I possibly can in my time there!!
You will regret it like Pxl8 said!! Go for it and enjoy, just be careful :woot:

New York is full of SLR carrying tourists just don't walk through the back streets of the Bronx with it after midnight!

New York is just as bad as any other city in the UK, It just depends where you go and at what time. If you're looking at taking pictures of the bronx, Get insured (Life & camera). But if you're going to be out in the main streets at both day and night, You'll be fine.

If you want some practise, go to Manchester or Liverpool one night. I hate how New York is perceived as a city of death by the media. It's no different than any other city right here, Just bigger!

The Bronx is fine - in daylight - just stay away from the Jersey side of the river...the lower east side is a bit...hmmm...as well

Ok, thanks everyone, I'm going to take it!! Just need to check that my insurance will cover it, I know I will regret it if I don't take it!

So you gonna take your dear SLR system out for some fresh air in its natural habitat, eh! You'll both enjoy it!

Although... you can take the bit about 'fresh air' literally: NYNY winters can be very nippy. Draining the batteries in your exposed cam inside 10/15 minutes if you don't watch out. So keep your cam inside your winter coat until you're ready to shoot, and stick it back there as soon as you got the shot in the can.

Have fun!

I've used my 20d in sub 10 and a single battery will still last me 500-600 shots (Full day's shooting in AI servo). I just had to charge them that night instead of the usual charging it maybe once a month.

I've been to New York three times in the past 18 months and would say that it is probably a lot safer than Manchester (where I am from) or Liverpool (where I now live). You will regret not taking your DSLR as there is so much to see and photograph. NY is not the same place as it was in the 70's and 80's. The zero tolerance policy they adopted to crime many years ago really did have an effect. If you get a chance drop into B & H on 9th Ave. It's a photographers dream. Particularly with the exchange rate at the moment. Have a great time.

I want to cry...Me and the wife should have been going to NY today! I was sooooooo looking forward to it, but seeing as she is now 7 months gone, i've something much, much better to look forward to!!!

Take it with you and have a ball!!! Take a few shots for me!
