For this week's course project we are doing landscape. I have to admit im not really very interested in landscape photography but im sure there are tings I can learn from it to carry over to the areas i hold more interest in!

Yesterday I took the below photo. The sin was almost directly behind me. How could I retake this image without getting the shadow? would I need to tajke it early morning rather than evening (it was about 7:30)

You could stand farther back with a longer lens so the shadow was out of frame.
 
You could sit or lie down. Would give you a different perspective. Or practice your Photoshop skills.
 
Clean the sensor. :)
 
Er, looks like a fairly fast bit of railway track you are standing on there?!!

As for the shadow, that'll be very easy to clone out in PP.

we are not allowed to use pp for the course, do you think i should just cheat? lol

it is fairly fast bit is very straight in both directions on a public crossing, odd jim my husband had a similar reaction!

why does teh sensor need cleaning?

and the course is a local evening college based one, no qualification but covers the basics weekly with a different project each week (av. tv. portraiture etc) its been a while since I was in a classroom setting so this structure is perfect for me!

I agree with the lower perspective suggestion.
 
No, don't cheat - that'd be pointless! Dealing with shadows is part of the skill you need as a photographer.

If you go back around three hours later (or earlier), the shadow will have moved 90 degrees. The earth turns, y'know :D

Actually I am not keen on the pedants that point out every spelling or grammar error, but it appealed to my dodgy sense of humour.:thumbs:

It seems you already know the answer.. take the picture at a different time so there is no shadow.. You ask how you can retake this image..Taking from lower down or any other angle will not get the same picture..

Again, maybe a bit pedantic, but you will never take the same pic. It isn't possible. A lower perspective may improve the image.
