weekly Severn Bore's 52 in 2014

Balance - cleverly set up with nice use of colour and good composition.

Change - not sure about the turquoise hue to the sky on the lh side, but the leaves look pretty good.

Balance, belter, always good to inject a bit of humour :) Well thought out and executed.

Change is on theme and wonderful autumnal colours. Just lacks a little something, not sure what, maybe a longer exposure to add a little dynamism

Cheers.

Hi Andrew :)

Balance - What a fun shot that is, the matchstick man stands out beautifully as does the blade edge of the knife, the background also helps it stand out - Nice One

Change - Some lovely autumnal colours captured there, I think the shot lacks a focal point, other than that, nicely exposed and real good to see some blue sky again :)

Hi
Glad you liked Balance. Not sure what you meant by suggesting a longer exposure for Change. Would this have been to introduce a bit of movement to the leaves? If so, I would be concerned that the crispness of the shapes would be lost.

Hi Elaine
Comments always appreciated. The hint of turquoise on the left was intended to reflect the colour of the sky in Spring time, but I might have got this wrong.

Hello Andrew ...

the falconer looks sharp enough to me ... nice capture.

Grow ... I like very much. Looks like those new shoots are striving. Nice use of SC

Hi Andrew

quite partial to a bit of selective color & like how you teamed it with a slight sepia color here (y) A very minor point...I wold have been tempted not to apply the sc to the very lowest leaves to disguise the fact they have been clipped very slightly ?

Skill.....nicely caught action & very sharp given the conditions you describe :)

Hi Andrew :)

Grow - Yes a very unusual SC with the sepia, nicely picked out leaves and a good selection, works well :)

Skill - With the conditions described a good capture, good to see the whole of the falconer, but I think you could crop this part way up his legs to bring the BOP as a more significant element, good timing

Thanks for the helpful comments. I will certainly try the sc and cropping suggestions.

Hi Andrew ...that's a really interesting idea with the SC for Grow ...I think I would have liked it applied to all the leaves though. Super texture there, both in the leaves and the branches.

Very nicely shot Skill ...the way you've captured the bird turning in flight for the lure is excellent.

Hi Andrew

simple, on theme , sharp ,a hint of a shadow to ground it ( pardon the pun !) & I think the grey bg works (y) The only niggle is the placement , or more precisely , the label on the cable....not sure if cropping that out would make it a little tight on the frame ?

Yep, ideas good Andrew, good detail(y)...........slightly different composition for me, I might have been tempted to turn the plug so the cord leads in more from the bottom left...........and, as Lynne mentioned, loose the label :)

Thanks Lynne and Phil-D,
I agree about the label. Tried to clone it away, but beyond my patience!

Grow - can only echo what others have already said about good use of selective colour against the sepia tones. I do like the fuzzy twigs!

Skill - great capture

Live - not quite sure about the font in the text box and like Phil, I would have probably have had the lead trailing more into the corner, but good for the theme and nice bits of colour amongst the black and white.

First - now that's what I call going above and beyond  Only minor crit would be that the pale blue tube of cream looks a bit wishy-washy against the white paper towel and a nice bright blue tube of Savlon might have made a better image, but we have to use what we have to hand ;)

Hi Elaine,
My daughter would not wait until I obtained some Savlon! Thanks for comments as always.

Hi, Andrew, missed a few.

Live, good idea and overall well composed. I might have tried a few different angles and maybe a little closer.

First, well thought out and the colours, especially the skin tones, look bang on.

One thing I would suggest, and you've done it with First is make sure you add a link from the No Comments thread to here

Cheers.

Hi Andy
Thanks for comments. I had not realised I failed to add the link on Live, so thanks for the alert.
Andrew

A very impressive-looking tool Andrew - lots of nice shiny bits and curves! My only crit would be that the little pile of shavings just above (or below, depending on which way you look at it!) the Workmate logo seems slightly oof. There's some good woodgrain detail in most of the other shavings and in the piece of timber itself, but that particular clump doesn't look quite right somehow.

Hi Elaine
Thanks for your comment. I see what you mean about those particular shavings. I had had a close look at them in a couple of other photos I took and they look the same. Examining the photo closely I can only think that the particular shavings were very thin and somehow diffused the light passing through them. Seems nothing wrong with the lens or sensor from waht I can see. Curious.....(n)

Smooth, another interesting take on the theme. I like the BG, and it's well set up. I'd like it closer, maybe a lot closer to the blade on the underside. A really close abstract would work for me.

Cheers.

Hi Andrew ...that certainly is a super shiny plane .... I like the idea on the workbench, it all looks incredibly clean and tidy, but I agree with Andy the plane would really suit a close up abstract style.
Thanks for comments, Andy & Susie - always welcome. I thought about getting closer, but thought the wider angle, taking in the timber, better reflected the theme. However, will probably give it another go.

Really good detail in the vine and it certainly looks well attached to the tree trunk! Can't quite decide about the mono conversion and would have liked to see what it looked like in the original colours.

Hi Andrew

Close....love this idea , good focus, good use of DOF to minimise the rear wall but still leave context of a workshop & well lit (y)

Attached.....yup ,I'm thinking color as well just to show some separation between the tree & the climber....:)

Hi Andrew

Much prefer your color version of Attached....you can see the differing textures much better (y)

Energy.....Ooooh , I like a good pylon shot & I love the 2 close ups....the symetry in #2 is just about perfect (y) only minor point is clipping of the 2 top clip things
#3....good close up , plenty sharp & even though it's the most abstract of the set you still know what it is :)

Keep going...almost at the end (y)
