Severn Bore's 52 for 2016

Hi Andrew,
Horizontal - Good spot. A good take on the theme. Nicely sharp and well exposed.
Vast - A decent sense of size there, that it is slightly off centre jars a little with my ocd. Interesting blue colour to the image. Presumably from the light coming in through the windows?

Beautiful colours and detail Andrew - definitely Vast.

Well spotted on the horizontal Andrew :)

Vast, that certainly fits the bill, nice colours too.

The people really sense of how vast the space is. I like the use of the door to frame it.

Horizontal - Well seen, I like the way the leaves have caught the light.

Certianly on theme Andrew I love old satined glass windows I agree with DK there appears to be a slight blue cast still a great image

Hiya Andrew,

Technology: is a good clean image, have we moved on that far yet. A good photo is a good photo.

Horizontal: this is a stunning image, perfect for the theme and well taken and spotted.

Vast - is a good image but I am not sure about the framing with the doorway, maybe its just me but it seems to crowd the image and seems a touch fake or added. I can also see it works as the image opens up from it too.

Horizontal - Great spot I like the light on the leaves and the contrast of greens
vast - great colour and I like the way you used the doorway to frame it

:clap:Yes, I like that composition too Andrew - the angles and mixed textures all work well against that plain white bg.

I find the background a bit busy, you were at 200mm using an IS lens on your (new shiny) crop, so I would have tried dropping the shutter speed to 1/200th / 1/250th which would have let you come down to f/4 and thus blur the background out more.

Far more importantly... How are you finding the 80d? :)

ETA: What was I thinking (drinking?) when I posted those settings????

So. Still come down to f/4 (gives you about 1.5 stops extra light)
Drop the iso from 400 to 100 (needs 2 stops more light)
Pull back the shutter speed from 1/800th to 1/600th to gain the missing 1/2 a stop of light.

Result - Same exposure, more background blur and slightly more dynamic range captured (which would help if you wanted to try to recover the highlights in pp).

Rough - interesting collection of textures I like the inclusions of saw dust
Covered - I agree with LC2 a more blurred background would make him pop more

Nice subject for the theme Andrew - almost posing for you. I haven't a clue about settings, in my ignorance I tend to just let the meter guide me.

Hi,
As always, comments appreciated. This was something of a snapshot taken with one hand as I was holding the dog on the lead with the other. The horse had noticed the dog, hence its interest.
As far as the EOS 80D is concerned, I am generally pleased with it. It is to replace my 7 (not 70) D which I am finding a bit too heavy with my advancing years. I find the autofocussing surprisingly faster than the 7D and am getting more keepers with it. However, exposure seems to be a bit erratic. I generally use evaluative metering in RAW and need to do a bit more post processing than with my 7D and 6D to get the results I want. This might be down to lack of experience with it. It is early days and no doubt results will improve with more use.

So lucky to get a shot at all then, with the dog probably wanting your attention :)

I'm contemplating the 80D to use when I don't want to take the 5D3 out and/or want the extra effective reach of a crop (as my 11 yr old has decided that my 7D is now his).
Interesting to hear that the metering behaves differently, certainly something to watch out for...
I shall be keeping an eye on your 80D shots with interest (whilst waiting for the early adopter premium to reduce a bit).

Covered ... wasn't sure at first, but now I know the horse is wary of the dog I look again and see the stance you've captured.

The two doors are great where about were they taken

Nice pic of the Azura, been on the sister ship Ventura. I have an archive shot somewhere of the Azura passing us by just outside St Vincent. Light was crap though. Shame really might of made a decent pic.
Like the coloured entrance door Andrew must admit

Very good catch up, the mural and doors are great and I really like the size photo the light on the cruise liner is very good and the "little" ferry next to it reallly gives a sense of scale/size

Thanks for comments. To Alan, the doors were photographed in the old artists' quarter in the Rua de Santa Maria, Funchal, Madeira last week. There is a whole street to choose from and I will probably put more of the photos on my Flickr page - https://www.flickr.com/photos/severnbore/ - in the next few days if you are interested. If you have not been, Madeira is a gem for photography, but not if you do not like hights and sudden drops - or being overwhelmed by predominantly old tourists like me!

Great catch up, I am off to Madeira in a few weeks time. The doors are both nicely taken. And the colourful pic certainly is, all nicely framed and very vibrant.
What were the gardens like in Funchal?

Hi Clive
Plenty of gardens to see in Madeira and the three main ones - at Monte, Royal Botanic and Palheira - all good. My wife and I liked the Monte one best. Excellent restaurants in Rua de Santa Maria where you will find the doors.
Have a great time.:)

You were spoilt for choice for entrance and colour in Madeira! I love the interest of the two doors and the graffiti is perfect for the theme...I was wondering if that was your tag bottom right until I saw the 'r' was missing...;)

Hi Andrew.
Colourful - it certainly is colourful, what is it?
I love the way the fire hydrant and cabinet have been incorporated into the artwork.
However... You could have moved the rubbish sack or cloned it out afterwards.

Entrance - That too is colourful, a very interesting find :)

Size - The Azura certainly is large, the smaller ship (ferry?) certainly emphasises just how large it is.

Entrance & Colour - Looks like an inverse 'Balamory'. Those doors are really great aren't they :)

Hi Andrew :)

Good catch-up, that's a wonderful coloured image on that wall, but that entrance image is my pic of these few, although the shot is great for size comparison I just love the colours and effect of the door, frame and surrounding elements, what a cracking entrance :)

Really like the trad. Portuguese door design with the newsprint makeover.

Hi Andrew

Great catch up absolutely love your image for Entrance love the painted images on the panels of the doors.

Oh wow! Brilliant catch-up - worth the wait Andrew. Some really marvellous shots in the set. Particularly like Size and Entrance/Colour. Well done on the catch-up.
