Settings on Compact

Just been tinkering about with the Canon Ixus 980 I just recently got second hand. This I am using as a keep in the top pocket and grab a quick snap as I am out and about sort of camera, nothing serious. Anything more creative I will use the DSLR.

I am simply going to leave it on P mode, and if I see anything worth snapping I will simply grab the camera out of my pocket and point and shoot.

I was just wondering, is it best to leave the colour mode in my colours, set to off, or can I get away with choosing a colour setting? Will choosing something like Vivid or Positive film etc, degrade the image quality?

I know the little compact is not going to create a DSLR qaulity image, but I would like to get the camera to give the best it can from what is available.

It won't degrade the image quality but you may not like the results, and you'll be shooting JPEG which limits your options in post processing.

I'd just experiment with the colour modes and see if you like them, then I'd probably leave it on the default setting!

Looking again at Vivid does look a little exaggerated, while the Positive film does look interesting. I will probably leave the settings at colours off, I assume to be the default, and switch over to the positive film when I feel like a little more colour needs adding :thumbs:
 
I should have mentioned this, but the vivid setting in your camera just increases the colour saturation by a fixed amount. You can replicate this in most post processing programmes using the saturation tool, and retain control over the process. To put it another way, you can choose just how much saturation to apply, rather than relying on the manufacturer's preset.
 
Cheers Martyn, I will probably leave the colours on the default setting as you suggested. Just need a couple of nice days for more testing :)
 
I don't know the Ixus but the Powershots and SX have a Natural colour setting which seems to work well.
If it allows a custom setting try contrast and saturation down one and sharpness down 1 or 2.

Just been trying the Natural colour setting, it does look good. I do also like the positive film also. As I said I will keep tinkering away, it is a neat little camera for use as a point and shoot. :)
