Hi guys,

How do you set up LR3 so all the folders, backup etc are on an HDD while the program is on an SSD?

just install it as normal, create the catalogue on the SSD, import your files from your HDD without moving

I'm a little confused how LR works. I import my photos direct from camera or card into LR and then export to a folder on the HDD. Don't all those photos in the catalogue get stored in LR on the SSD?

i copy all of my files from the CF to the HD first personally then add them without moving on an import.

but you could also just copy them straight to the HD on the import, you can specify the destination.

That's what I do, the actual photos themselves are not kept by Lightroom, only their location.

Okay, I see. I have always been sketchy on that. So lightroom only catalogues what is already there, it doesn't create copies.

But it doesn't as default?

dont know, i think it remembers your last settings..

if you select ADD when you import it will use the files in their current location, or you could do a COPY/MOVE to get them from a CF to a HD. there is a checkbox on the right hand side to make a copy.

I usually make virtual copies in Lightroom, process the copies then export them to a new folder (specified during the export) within the original photo folder.

ie. I import say East Fortune Aug 2012 as an entire folder from drive E into Lightroom, choose some and make virtual copies to work on, when processing complete I export to a subfolder called say Talkphotography, within my original East Fortune Aug 2012 folder on drive E.

More or less what I do but I'm thinking of reorganising my pictures folders.

I just use windows explorer to cut and paste files from CF to hard drive using a card reader. I then open LR and import the files so they are listed in lightrooms library.

Once I've done my LR edits I export jpegs to a subfolder of the one with the RAWs. I have export presets saved with different pixel sizes so my normal export is to a folder called 2000pixels (for screensaver /TV viewing) but I may have other sizes too as subfolders.

So I have a folder with 7 years worth of date order raws folders with jpegs under them and it's getting too big.

I don't need regular access to the older raws but its going to take some untangling from the jpegs to archive them.

If I was starting from scratch I'd have one folder with just raws under it and export to a new tree of folders just for jpegs.

I understand what you are saying, Robert but at least you can still use Lightroom database to find your photos easily.

Perhaps you could split your folder into different folders based on years or subjects, yet still keep your jpegs and RAWs together?

I don't have a problem with finding things and the folders are organised on disk in year/month/description folder tree. it's just the size of that photos folder now that I'd like to cut down. Probably 2/3rds to 3/4 of the space used is raws and mov video files both of which have been edited into new easier to view files.

I'll tackle it sometime but not yet :)

I regularly go through all my folders with the critical eye only time gives and cull like crazy. I'm only ever really happy with a few shots per shoot so I no longer keep the rest.
