Yes
probably a really basic question but...how do you set a really long exp on the Nikon D5000...? i have tried scrolling the rear control dial in both "M" mode and "S" mode but it reaches a maximum value (cannot remember exactly what it is but not over a couple of mins) and i cannot make it go any further.

Many Thanks

I don't know specifically for your model, but most cameras shutter speed will only go as slow as 30 secs or so. If you want to go slower than that, you need to select the Bulb setting, usually marked as B. With this setting, the shutter will stay open as long as you hold it down. To avoid camera shake, it is adviseable to use a remote shutter release when using Bulb mode.

The D5000 only goes to 30 seconds. As Derek said above, you need BULB. This keeps the shutter open for as long as you press the button.
A remote release is almost essential for this, as you cant stand there for several minutes with your finger on the button without inducing some camera shake.

Also be aware if you have the setting "long NR ON", your exposure times will double, as it takes a blank frame at the same length you held the shutter open for, so a 2 min exposure becomes 4 minutes etc..
