My 100-400 mk1 is getting on a bit, been heavily used and the lock function (twisty bit) is getting tired so I'm thinking of sending it off for a service.

looking at the website the closest repair centre is Elstree but are there any alternatives that would be a better option?

The main question I have is likely cost? I've never serviced a lens but would like to know roughly what I might expect to pay as it still operates perfectly well so debating whether it is worth it or not?
 
I paid £60 for a service to my 100-400 at elstree. That was in 2011, so not sure if its gone up.
(and I would recommend Elstree too, since it is 'the' canon service centre)
 
Thank you, do you just fill out the service report form online, post it in recorded and wait or do you need to call them up first?
 
I contacted them by email. I actually took it round to them as it wasn't far from where I was working.
but they accept rmsd delivery, and will return it to you this method too... they gave me that option, but again it was easier for me to collect it.

They quoted up to 10days, but it was turned around in a working week.
 
They do fixed price repairs / estimates etc... call them up and ask..

I have used them and they give excellent results

I only live round the corner so I deliver and collect as well.
 
Yes they did mine on a fixed price service fixed several problems for the fixed price fee
excellent job at Elstree and reasonable price no point sending it anywhere else
 
Elstree did a superb job servicing my 100-400 - they did it on the fixed price service, but replaced so much of the lens it actually ended up with a new serial number, yet didn't charge me any more for either parts or labour. I was highly impressed and would not use anywhere else. They did an impressive job on my 500 when the aperture diaphragm jammed as well - turned it round in under a week.
 
For excellent service I would not hesitate to recommend Lehmanns in Stoke on Trent

Had mine serviced there, they replaced the seal between the two half's, the bit that slides with FL adjustment, full service and adjustment, £220.00 inc VAT
It came back in one day and is spot on.
