Hello all!
Ive a 2007 Canon EOS400D which I’ve owned since new. It sometimes won’t focus automatically and photos aren’t as clear as they were!
Would you get it looked at/serviced or invest in new kit? If new kit, any advice welcome!
Hope you can help!
Thanks,
Steve

Given that MPB have a load of 400D's at sub £50 its probably going to cost more to fix it than its worth.
If you want to stick with Canon because of lenses sort out your budget and have a browse on Wex and MPB, anything newer than what you have now will be an improvement.

If it won't focus, the problem may lie with the lens, so getting the camera serviced may just be a waste of your money (which it probably would be anyway, as @troutfisher outlines above).

Do you only have a single lens? If not, does the problem appear with other lenses? If you only have one lens, maybe time to buy a second - warning: this can get very addictive!

not worth a service, that is from the era that i consider dslr`s were quite poor.

the 550 era onwards was much better

I suppose it all depends what you expect and what you compare them to. An ex of mine used a 400D to photograph things to sell on her online shopping site and was able to capture good detail in clothing clearly showing the stitching, it all looked ok to me. Times have moved on but getting something better will cost more and will depend on how much the op wants to spend. Personally I'd ditch the DSLR and go mirrorless but a mirrorless camera and a lens could cost £250-300.

As Paul says above, I'd try and decide if it was the camera or lens before buying something new unless the new used camera comes with a lens too,

Thanks to all of you for your much appreciated replies! I think the best thing I can do is some research into 2022 cameras! Probably clutching at straws to think the 400D was worth spending money on. I’ll do some digging then come back to you all for further advice if that’s ok! Steve.

Ok…..Wex have offered me decent £s for my old kit and am discussing new kit with them tomorrow. In meantime a neighbour showed me his Sony RX10……and gave me a demo. It might be a way forward as I won’t need to carry different lenses…..we’ll see! But any thoughts on the RX10 gratefully received! Steve.

1" sensor compacts might be worth a look. I have a Panasonic TZ100 which has a 25-250mm lens. The lens on that RX10 will almost certainly be better than you'd get on any 1" sensor but small body and lens compact camera though.

Another option could be MFT as you can have a small body and lens which will still give better image quality than the old Canon DSLR's. I like the VF in the corner RF style cameras.

Thanks, Alan (woof woof!) - have continued looking at sample photos from the RX10 - have got to say I'm impressed by the quality, even at 600mm zoom. will also check out your suggestions - it's a whole new world in photography now compared to when I bought the EOS 400 back in 2007!
