i have several faded, very old sepia photo's i wish to convert into black and white, and generally freshen up.

how do i go about this?

i have photoshop elements 9, and lightroom 3, just learning.

thanx from jan

It's hard to say without seeing them but scan them in, in PS duplicate the layer and put it to mulitply (if they are badly faded) then play around with the opacity.
You could use any of the B+W conversion or scan them in as B+W if your scanner has that option.

hi again

i followed your advice in getting them to black and white, but could see nothing remotely to do with muliplying. so they're very faded and not usable.

hi

you have been a very great help to me for which i thank you for enormously. i'll try the former as i don't think my scanner has the b&w option.

Open the layers palette in elements (if it's not already open) drag the background layer to the new layer icon on the layers palette (I thnk they are on the top in elements but I'm not sure) that will give you 2 layers the same, click on the top layer then on the layers palette is a drop down box that says normal, change that to multiply.

hi again wayne

i hope you are well.

i'm just waiting for the postman to deliver an external hard drive to backup all my photos. but i'm still not clear how to export and import photos correctly and put them in collections rather than folders. its destination i'm most unclear about. i've tidied up my photos by putting them in years, months, and day's as well as a brief description. that's a big help. i also deleted the photos that came with my lesson book now, as they were complicating everything and i no longer need them. last night i cleaned out everything from lightroom. i wanted to start afresh and i have photos to develop still in my camera.

should i delete lt3cib lrcat and lrdat do you know? i was too scared to do that myself as lr3cib is where my photos are at present. should i simply move the photos to another location first? to me that sounds obvious.

regards from jan
