I have recently done some work on my website to improve my SEO for better google rankings. It seems to be working as today I have been coming up on page 2 of google with the search terms I am targeting.

My only concern is that it's my 'about me' page that is ranking high on google, rather than my homepage, which seems to be nowhere to be seen...

My homepage has some writing as well as a photo slideshow so there's plenty of content that google can search/index etc, and I have all my meta descriptions, titles, tags entered, so bit baffled why google is ranking my about page above my actual homepage.

Anyone else had this kind of experience?

What are the search terms you are targeting?

ipswich photographers, photographers ipswich, photographer ipswich etc

Just confused as to why google has ranked my about page rather than homepage.

I haven't got as far as the SEO yet, but please have someone proof read your site before you launch it - you jump from the third person to the 2nd (and as a sole trader the first person is so much better).

I can see no reason why the about me page should rank higher than the homepage, but I wouldn't be too concerned, as people will hit the home button on a site if they're misdirected.

As a personal gripe - I'd also get rid of the click protect thing. It drives lots of people mad and stops no-one stealing your images.

Possibly a bit tenuous, but the home page mentions 'photographer' once and 'ipswich' once, the about page mentions 'ipswich' once but 'photographer' twice. Also the headings on the homepage are messed up (start at <h2> with no <h1> heading) which may contribute. But as Phil says it doesn't really matter as users will just find your about page then click 'home' if they need to.

Thank you for the tips, I see what you mean by jumping between 3rd and 2nd person, doesn't read well.

Yes I guess there's no point for the click protect when i've watermarked the images anyway.

Thanks for checking it out, i'll sort out those h1/h2 headings.

Holly.
You've rushed through sorting it, and now it reads odd. Have someone close to you proof read it before publishing.

I specialise in event photography, and available to hire for a wide range of photography requirements; including live music, festivals, private parties, and your special occasions.
There's a missing I'm, but even then it's not particularly good grammar. You're selling yourself here and the old adage 'You only get one chance to make a first impression' is still very true.

That bit just doesn't read well at all, thanks for pointing it out.

I'm going to get it proof read after i've gone through and checked it all properly, and sorted my grammar out. What makes sense to me (and MS Word) probably doesn't to people reading it!
