Could someone tell me how to lock up the mirror on my D40 so that I can clean the sensor? I have just photographed a sheet of white paper and found just one little black dot . Is this enough to warrant a clean? I tend to get paranoid about this sort of thing! I'd probably have gone on quite happily if I'd not heard of Dust!! Thanks. Mick.
 
I would say it's most certainly not enough to warrant a clean, just being a little paranoid ;) If it doesnt affect your pictures, don't worry about it - if it aint broke, dont fix it!
 
Ta, dfrear, I've only found the spot on one picture so far and wouldn't have noticed it if I hadn't been looking for it!

As a matter of interest, what method do you use to clean your sensor i.e do you you rely on mirror lock-up or do you use a cleaning tool? I shoot a lot on beaches along the East Lothian coast and I'm paranoid about getting sand into the camera. :)

I use a rocket blower with the mirror up, and nothing else. If it needs more of a clean, I take it to Cameratiks in Morningside for a £30 full clean :)

I lock the mirror up in the menu and clean using a rocket blower and arctic butterfly.

I did it on my D40X and D80 and in both cases a year of dust build up was cleaned off 100%. Beforehand I was terrified. I've got very few reservations now, as with a bit of care its very easy and satisfying yourself £30 odd!
